Agility, Agility!

I just got my email confirmation that Faith and I did get into our first ever AKC agility trial!  Oh em gee.  I am already feeling nervous.  We're just doing one day of Novice A JWW.  I really hope it's not a disaster.  If it is, I'll blame it on the fact that it's indoors.  The great thing is that the running order is small-to-tall, which means ( Read more... )

Sorry to say, but before Darce graced our lives with his presence, my aunt and I would always root for anything bu any variety of poodle. The problem, we think, is that judges love poodles tooooooo much.

Before I figured out which breed I wanted, I thought poodles were ridiculously ugly. (I also thought their coat felt like terrier wire, haha.) Now that I have my own poodle, I have seen the light! ;)

I just thought their owners must be insane with no time on their hands. haha!
What made you change your mind and get Faith?

I researched pretty much every breed under the sun, and standard poodles just fit all my criteria. I wanted a dog who was a) smart, b) athletic, c) sweet, and d) big enough so that I could say to myself, "It's okay, my dog is here to protect me" when I heard a weird noise in the night (but not TOO big). The whole non-shedding thing and the poodle sense of humor sealed the deal. I love all dogs, but I really do think poodles are special. If I don't get a whippet or a border collie for my next dog, I think it'll be another poodle.

(Sorry it took me so long to get back to this.)

Interesting! Did the time it takes to groom intimidate you at all? That was my biggest thing when I was deciding on Darce (obviously I'm more of a mutt kinda girl - Brody was Dane/Shep/Mal). They had just shaved him allllllllll the way down because he was so matted coming in (seen here - the first night I brought him home)) but I knew that with poodle in him it'd be growing in no time.
I know a bunch of tidbits about each breed because of working in the shelter for so long, but I always thought the conformation poodle owners were nuts. Even in a sporting clip you have to be diligent and I don't have that kind of patience. It's why Darce always looks ridiculous. Luckily he doesn't mind. ;)

(No worries!)

The grooming requirements didn't really bother me that much. I figured if it was horrible I'd just shave her down completely (which I have done--twice!). In some ways she's easier than, say, a Sheltie or a Golden because poodles look more normal shaved down than those breeds (in my unbiased opinion). What I didn't count on was that I would be scared to clip her myself for the first few times because I was afraid of hurting her eyes. I let her face get pretty fuzzy during the first several months I had her. But it was no big deal.

Haha, my dog prances around with poofs on her ankles, and you tell me Darcy looks ridiculous? :)

But she's a poodle, she's supposed to look ridiculous! :D

There's a doodle "look" that Darce's bad genes just cannot accommodate, though he does try hard. The alopecia doesn't exactly help things, but beyond that his hair kind of...goes crazy instead of smoothing out and growing down. It just grows...out. ahahah I don't know, I call him a whack-a-doodle and I don't really care how he looks as long as he can see. He gets unceremoniously shaved down for the summer but I like his head and tail fluffy so fluffy they remain! Then he looks extra dumb. hahahh Oh man, the things we do to these beasties!
