Wow. What an intriguing look at the central events in the story. I particularly like your characterization of Peter - essentially a rat, but in a matter of fact way. That's what rats do. I like that this story is neither an apology for Peter nor a condemnation of him.
I also like the way fate seems to have twisted itself around to make sure everything happens, despite Peter's efforts to put it off track. This leaves me wondering what other changes Peter's choices would cause to occur, but not in a way that makes this piece incomplete. Nicely done.
Thank you! (And I always think that icon is appropriate for this story.) This sentence: I like that this story is neither an apology for Peter nor a condemnation of him. made me so happy, because that was exactly what I wanted to do. And yeah- I would love to see a sequel to this, to see how everything turns out, but I just don't have the time (or really the inspiration) to write it! :)
I really enjoyed this! You're always fabulous at plot, of course, but this has a kind of O. Henry twist, in which Harry's changed birthdate brings on another set of horrors rather than the horrors we already know--or the happy ending we might expect. Brava! Maggie
Wow. That was really well done. The scene with Sirius and James's deaths made me absolutely hate Peter, but I do agree with other commenters that you've presented a realistic and matter-of-fact characterization of Peter. It's a really intriguing AU, even if the results are perhaps even more horrific than canon, if you look at them too hard.
Thank you :) Yeah, this isn't one of those fics that's supposed to make you like Peter. I was appalled at myself at times, especially when I watched my fingers type "and turned into a rat and hid under the table". (Originally Peter wasn't going to make it to the cottage in time.)
Although, I have to admit, the results could have been worse. Peter truly does love Harry, and will actually tell Harry about the prophecy and the horcruxes. Harry will grow up with someone who cares about him and reads him bedtime stories and does all those daddy-type things, but just really isn't the best person. So, I guess it could be worse? :)
Excelllent: frightening and compelling. I particularly liked the Peter voice - the way he can be reasoning very coldly and yet refusing to admit to himself what's going on (like in the scene where he hears Sirius being tortured and worries about his shoes), the mixture of cowardice with worry about his friends and impatience that they won't draw the same conclusions as him. I also liked the idea that Peter ended up helping the prophecy be fulfilled after all.
Thanks! :) I was really happy with Peter's voice in this- I don't get the chance to write him enough, and this is sort of my "standard Peter characterization" (right down the the love of Divination and working for Bertie Botts.) Glad you enjoyed it!
