Wow, this was beautifully written and I was both sympathetic to and chilled by Doris Purkiss' character in her lonely stalker-dom. (And lovely, clever use of an obscure canon character!)

(I feel a bit embarrassed but I *am* slow. How did Rita engineer the accident? Did she surreptitiously charm Doris' hair ornament?)

Thank you so much! No embarrassment necessary, I wrote it in an elliptical fashion that left some important points to be guessed at. Some sort of surreptitious broom-tampering was involved, and Rita hoped that Doris would implicate herself in an obvious manner; when Doris went to see Stubby Boardman instead, she had to fall back on plan B.

Also, I hadn't read the header properly -- after a quick google, I see that Fabius was a JKR character too.

I'm so glad I asked. I feel doubly silly now, but how clever of you to weave all these characters into your story :)

Yes, perhaps it could have been clearer, but my idea was that she couldn't resolve her ambivalence about Fabius after the nasty RL meeting, so she found a new object for her affection, and thus avoided playing the role Rita had planned for her. ;) Thanks again, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
