The moment the Doctor realizes who River Song is, he wants more time with her. He book is not as thick as he thought it would be. There is not enough adventures in it, even though he did not look inside it.
When he regenerates and allows her to collide into him, once more, he wishes he had more time with her. He wants to read her diary entry of that particular time. During their time with the Pandorica, he pulls a few flirts, is heartbroken when he realizes she has been stuck in a time loop for two thousand years.
During his three months in the prison supplied by Canton, he thought of all the things they could have done in that time with her. The places they could have gone to. The ways he could have expressed how much he was growing to love her.
He just wanted more time with her.
