Ashley Magnus tossed and turned in her head. The familiar hum of the heater working was absent that night and she could feel it. Of course, on the coldest night in Old City’s history, the heater in the Sanctuary decided to crap out leaving them all to fend for themselves. Her mom had informed them that they would get a mechanic in the massive building in the morning but first everyone had to live through the night and hope to not freeze to death.

Despite her sheets and comforter, not to mention the t-shirt, sweatshirt, sweatpants, and socks she was wearing, she was still at risk for hypothermia. Giving up on trying to keep herself warm, which hadn’t worked for the past two hours, she jumped off her bed, put on her slippers, and wrapped her comforter around her. If she couldn’t warm up by herself, then she would have to find someone else to help her out.

She went through the options of residents in the building and decided her best bet was her best friend, Henry. Even in the dark of the hallways, she found his room easily enough and tapped quietly on the door. She had been standing for a minute before turning her back and walked down the hallway.

She heard a low whistle and turned to see Henry in the same attire as her, from the comforter down to the socks, half standing in the doorway. From the distance and darkness, she could still tell that he hadn’t been sleeping and probably suffering the same fate as the rest of them. She retraced her steps back to his door and whispered, “Hey. Mind if we bunk together? We’re going to freeze if we don’t.”

He stepped out of the way and allowed her inside. She rushed to his bed and flopped in the middle. “Nah,” she heard from behind her, “You’re on the right.”

She turned to him, “My right or your right.”

“Your right.” Henry said as he went to his side of the bed. He lay out his comforter on the bed once more and took Ashley’s and lay it on his. By the time he was done, she was under the sheets and comforters and on her side, facing away from him, her body wrapped like a fetus. He lay down next to her but kept some distance.

“You do know we’re not going to get anywhere if we’re sleeping like this right?” She asked as she turned onto her back.

“Yeah.” He said hesitatingly.

“Jeez, Henry, it’s just me.” Ashley said as she reached across his chest, grabbed his hand, and pulled him into her original position. “See, warmth.”

And Henry felt it. The way they were sleeping-Ashley with her back into his chest, their two forms melding so well. He couldn’t help but smell the shampoo she had used for years at this point. She moved a little to make herself more comfortable and he accommodated the movement. When she was done and hadn’t moved for a several minutes, he allowed himself to get comfortable and nuzzle his face in her hair.

Ashley entwined their fingers and lightly kissed the back of his hand before speaking up, “Are you warm?”

“Getting there. You?”

“Almost there.” She paused a moment, “Night, Henry.”

“Night Ash.”
