Globes

I found myself waiting, idly twirling a globe. The globe was obviously not new, but I started entertaining myself with identifying when this one had been produced by looking at countries that didn't exist any more.

The most obvious one was that the northern hemisphere was dominated by the United Soviet Socialist Republics, or USSR. That wasn't the first thing I noticed, however: Europe still had Yugoslavia instead of the several republics which have taken its place.

What other countries could one look for to determine the age of a globe or map? I didn't think to check out East/West Germany, but that would be something to look for. Wasn't there a West Pakistan that became Bangladesh at some point?

There must be a place on a globe where the copyright date is written. I'd think it would be in the middle of the pacific ocean where usually the publisher is named, but I've not found it there. Anyone know?
