Ancient Runes: Assyrian runes
Option 1: Imitate the shape of Assyrian letters by crafting something using a modular pattern.

Option 2: Practice creating words with your runes. Craft something that is made of many (more than 5) pieces. Please photograph it before and after they are sewn together.

Option 3 Ashurbanipal - Using the king of Assyria as your inspiration craft, something that would be fit for his royal status. Dyers and spinners, please explain how you were inspired and your creative process in either words or pictures.

Arithmancy
Option 1: Gauge. Patterns list recommended gauge to help knitters, crocheters, and weavers accurately replicate the size of objects. Explore the divinatory significance of gauge by using a pattern with a recommended gauge, but flouting that recommendation and crafting to a different gauge instead. Is your finished object the same size as the pattern predicted? Were you able to follow the pattern’s instructions precisely, or did you have to make adjustments to achieve the results you desired? (Hint: If you aren’t sure what will happen when you use a different gauge than the pattern, make a bag or other object which does not need to be an exact size.)

Option 2 (Spinners and dyers): Color Progression. The length of the color progressions in a yarn determine whether it will knit or crochet up as self-striping or variegated in a given project, as well as controlling any pooling. Use Arithmancy to create a self-striping or variegated yarn and to predict how it will knit or crochet up. You do not need to swatch, but we understand if you are compelled to check immediately whether your results have conformed to your predictions.

Care of Magical Creatures: the Clabbert
Option 1: Craft a monkey or frog inspired project. For example, you could make an frog amigurami or a cheeky, monkey patterned fair isle hat. Be creative!!

Option 2: Craft something that would protect you from danger. For example, a sonic screwdriver may come in handy in a tricky situation!

Option 3: Seeing all the lights really puts us in the holiday spirit and it’s only July!! So craft a Christmas present! Lets get a jump on the upcoming holiday season! Chanukkah presents will also be accepted for this option

Charms: Flesh Memory
Option 1: Construct something that opens and closes: a bag, a cardigan, a pair of gloves with buttons at the wrist, a bonnet that fastens under the chin. Use your imagination. When in doubt, remember buttons and other fasteners.

Option 2: Craft something that means something specific to you personally - an item only you know the purpose of (though you’ll have to share it with us), an inside joke spun into your yarn, or a cover for your diary so that only you can pick it out from a shelf of books.

DADA
Option1: “Be the change you want to see in the world” ~Gandhi - Make something inspired by a member of Dumbledore’s Army. A full list can be found here.

Option 2: “Education is a better safeguard of liberty than a standing army.”~Edward Everett - Make something that helps you practice a skill that you would like to improve.

Option 3: “There is nothing on this earth more to be prized than true friendship.“~Thomas Aquinas - Make something that reminds you of a strong friendship that you have.

History of Magic: Egypt
Option 1: Investigate an Egyptian pyramid, and craft something inspired by what you found there. Spin cobwebs, knit something in the rich colours of the ancient paintings on the walls, or crochet something that symbolizes the protective magic keeping the muggles out.

Option 2: Craft something that would help you detect or break the ancient curses that still linger. Could a special hat vibrate when you approached an aged but still powerful warding spell? Would special gloves help make your wandwork more dexterous? Could you encode cursebreaking instructions in your scarf? Maybe you could charm a pair of slippers to keep you from tripping a magical alarm.

Muggle Studies: Knit, crochet, weave, spin or dye something inspired by a fairytale

Potions: Antidotes
Option 1: Craft an item inspired by one of the Direct Antidotes You may use one from the list (Deflating Draught - antidote for Swelling Solution, Boil Cure Potion - counteracts Furnunculus Curse, Glumbumble Treacle - antidote for hysteria produced by Alihotsy Leaves, Mandrake Draught - counteracts petrification, Wiggenweld Potion - antidote for Draught of Living Death) or do your own research. You must name your poison, potion or magical effect as well as your Direct Antidote in your homework. Bonus Points are available for exceptional homework.

Option 2: Create a Complex Antidote using the principles set forth in Golpalott’s 3rd Law. Use a single ingredient to pull together a project with multiple aspects. An example of this might be (but is not limited to) using a single color as background (or foreground) to multicolor knitting or crochet or use it to join multicolor modules together to form a whole project. You could also craft an item that uses a recurring motif. For spinning, you might ply a single colored single with a color shifting single to create a pleasing yarn. In your homework, be sure to state the poisons you are counteracting, and tell us why you chose your single special ingredient.

Option 3: Just use a bezoar. Just use any project to get points for the class. While bezoars will counteract any poisons, bezoars are not always available, therefore we do encourage any student serious about potionmaking to explore one of the other options for this class which will give you a much better foundation in the creation of antidotes.
