Tales from Essay Grading

So I've begun to grade some more essays. I'm amused and disgusted at the same time when I read some of them.

Here's one kid from California, actual excerpts with mistakes (the prompt is entitled Appreciate While It's Gone):

I had my license for two weeks, and I had a car, my sister's car. To me this car was like any other car, even though it was a BMW. I thought less of this luxury car because it had lots of problems.

He wrecks it beyond repair three weeks later by running into some trees. Fortunately, his parents had enough sense to not let him drive for a while.
