Song Review: Bob Dylan's "Dreamin' Of You"

The eighth volume of Bob Dylan's Bootleg Series comes out in October, featuring outtakes from his work with producer Daniel Lanois as well as a few other odds and ends. Entitled "Tell Tale Signs," one of the tracks, "Dreamin' Of You," has been released as a single. After listening to it a few times, I'm ready to offer my analysis.

"Dreamin' Of You" is an outtake from the 1997 album "Time Out Of Mind." Anchored by a bluesy riff, the song covers a lot of the deep lyrical territory explored on "Time." However, it is immediately apparent why it didn't make the final cut. It has a distinct alt. rock vibe that separates it musically from the other songs on the album, which have a deeper rooting in the blues. In addition, its lyrical content is largely covered by the record's other songs. But despite how odd it is at first to hear Dylan singing against an alt. rock backing (check out that piano work), the song still grooves and Dylan's vocals are, as always, beautifully expressive.

The conclusion: Casual Dylan fans needn't seek this out, as it's not an essential addition to his catalog, but anyone with more than a passing interest in his work is encouraged to give it a listen. To get a hold of it, simply go to www.bobdylan.com - you'll see where to click immediately. As for me, I think it's quite good and I'm looking forward to the release of the full set in October. I'm sure it's going to be great.
