[mod post] Weekly Check-in -- It's almost May

Apr 29, 2014 09:11

Greetings omgspnbigbangers! The time to turn in your rough drafts for the spn-j2-bigbang is almost here. Depending on where you are in the world, you have between two and a half and less than two days left!

A quick reminder that we are currently running an anything goes challenge called the omgchallenge! Sign up if you haven't already. A victory post will go up at 11:59 PDT on April 30th, so that should catch most of us on May 1 when we are declaring victory.

Tonight at 9pm PDT (that's currently GMT -7) we will be running a speed writing challenge in the style of write or die. We'll post a "ready" post at 8:45, followed by a "go" post at 9, and a "stop" post at 9:45. We may repeat if there is enough interest!

A few words of wisdom about bigbang rough drafts in general:

* You have until Midnight (i.e., the end of the day) on May 1 to turn in your drafts.

* Yes that means you can be writing your fic on May 1, turn it in just before the stroke of midnight, and be okay. But please defer to the posting instructions so you give wendy and her mods everything they need.

* Your draft doesn't have to be beta'd. For that matter it doesn't have to he pretty or even spell-checked if that saves you time. Yes the bigbang requires betas, but that is for your final product. Not right now.

* You can add to your fic later. You can also take things out to tighten up yohr story as long as the final product remains 20k or longer. I know the challenge says your fic has to be a complete draft with a beginning, middle, and end and no missing scenes, but the translation for that is your fic has to have enough there to be a complete story that more less makes sense as is and does not have any missing scene placeholders. If you need to gloss over a few parts to get to the end, or if youbhad to excise subplots to get it done in time, that's okay. You can polish, expand, and add in subplots after the rough draft.

* Don't panic

*Yes, the version of your summary you submit now is the same one the artists will use to claim fic.

* No, your artist won't see this version of the fic. You have a few days (actually a little more than that) to make it pretty before your artist sees it and plenty of opportunities to update your artist if you wind up with more polished drafts later on.

* Everyone gets an artist.

* No matter what you're writing or how weird you think it is, there's an audience for it.

* There is no maximum fic length. Every year at least one person turns in a fic in excess of 200k. I can think of one off the top of my head that is well over 200k and probably one of the most recced fics out there. No matter how long or short (as long as it's at least 20k) your fic is, there's an audience.

Now take deep breaths, focus, and remember, you can do this!
