Since most of you asked for separate posts for those offering betas and seeking beta services, that’s what we’re doing. Think of this as a sort of spn-j2-bigbang classified ads section for betas and writers.

Hi there! Not offering to beta at this time, but I wanted to give you a little more info about what betas do. Beta readers are anyone who reads your draft, unfinished story and offers feedback. Most betas ask as some sort of editor, be it full text editing (offering comments on word choice, character development, plot, story structure, etc.) while others focus on what would more commonly be considered copyediting or proffreading--looking at spelling, grammar, consistency of style, etc. What a beta does for you is up to you the writer and how the beta delivers that feedback, is a negotiation between you and your beta. You may know this, but since you said you hadn't worked with a beta before, so please ignore if I'm telling you something you already know.

That's about what I thought. I've had a few alpha readers, but I've never really found the need for a full-on beta reader. But then, rules are rules. :)

Well all that distinguishes an alpha from a beta really is that the beta helps with the story when it's a little closer to being done. To satisfy the "must be beta'd" rule all you *really* need to do is have someone proofread for you.

Something about my fic (optional): It’s a surfer!fic, so maybe someone with surfing knowledge or experience. I’m trying to find an SME for that, but it’d be cool to find a SME and beta in the same person. Surfing experience is NOT a requirement for betaing (is that a word?), though. It’s going to be around 60K, but don’t quote me on that and yes it will have m/m sex.
