So last night, my darling friend Rhianna and I went to see Ben Abraham, Anna Mathewson and Sunday Waits, at the Wesley Anne in Northcote (a suburb in Melbourne). And it was so excellent :D
I first heard
Ben Abraham's music at the end of last year, November or December, after searching "ukulele" on Triple J Unearthed. I'm so glad that I did, because he is an amazing musician :D I pretty much fell right in love with his voice, and I adore his lyrics - he's got a real sense of humour in them, and amazing delivery.
So when we learnt that he was going to be playing at the Wesley Anne, Rhi and I decided we HAD to go (actually, there were a few before this, that we really wanted to go to, but couldn't for various reasons, so it was a little postponed, but we got there in the end). I'm so glad that we did - Ben's live performances kicked arse, and we got to talk to him, after the show. And he was SO NICE! He had noticed that Rhi and I were singing along to "Me and Rose" (definately check that one out, it is made of excellence), and was really surprised that there were people there who actually knew the words :D He seemed like a really lovely, genuine guy - on stage, too - which makes his music even better, I reckon :D
Next up, last night, was Anna Mathewson. I hadn't really heard her music before, because she's not on Triple J Unearthed, and so I'd only heard snippets of her music, on her website, which meant I couldn't keep them and myself familiar. Although Anna had an AMAZING voice, her stage presence was a little lacking. THAT SAID, she was sick, and it was her third gig of the day... so it's possible that that was to blame :)
And, so,
Sunday Waits were third and final for the evening, and I was a little familiar with their stuff, having looked them up when I heard that they would be playing this gig. They were pretty excellent, but the thing I liked about them most was that THEY came up to US after the gig and started chatting. And they were really genuine, humble people, too. They asked us who we'd come to see, and I'd said that it was Ben, but that we'd looked them up, and were on our iPods... and they seemed genuinely surprised that we'd liked what we'd heard - AND the singer complimented me on my glasses 8)
So definately go check these folks out, and if you're ever in Melbourne, head over to the Wesley Anne (I pretty much fell in love with it XD)
