Hark, a blog!

Well, welcome to my blog!

This blog is a semester-long project for my English III class. First of all, I'd like to admit that I'm absolutely terrible at these things. I can't even remember how many blogs that I've started and then abandoned! Really, I'm terrible.

But, the thing is, that's the whole point of the project. I want to teach myself the discipline that it takes to keep up some kind of journal. Being able to organize your thoughts into something legible is a good life skill to have. So I want to learn. Also, it's nice to have a place to blather about all of the nerdy stuff that I'm into.

So, introductions! I'm a sophomore at a private school in Northern California. I'm really into art, music, movies and YA fiction. I work as a freelance web-designer in my free time, and my current life goal is to buy a car. Oh, a nice, pretty car. My favorite genres of music are acoustic, folk and indie in general. My favorite musical artists are Jack Johnson and The Submarines. I love art, and my general goal for the future is to make a living in animation. I don't really have a favorite classical artist, but if I was pressed I'd say Tissot. The realism of the late 19th century is beautiful, and I've always had a soft spot of Tissot's oil paintings. Movies! Oh, I love movies. Anything from cartoons to indie movies. My favorites are the Disney Classics.

YA fiction deserves it's own paragraph. I read so much and have so many favorite books that it's almost insane. My favorite authors are (in no particular order): Tamora Pierce, Kristin Cashore, Scott Westerfeld, Holly Black, Cassandra Clare, Sarah Dessen, Dianne Wynne Jones and most recently Suzanne Collins. I have ready literally every novel that Tamora Pierce has ever published. Though her style isn't very distinct, the subject matter of her books is great. As for Kristin Cashore, she's a bit of a feminist, but her writing style is amazing, and her two novels, Graceling and Fire, are squeel-worthy. Scott Westerfeld, my god, is amazing. He's really the only mainstream YA author who has embraced both the cyber- and steam-punk genres, which in my opinion are highly underrated. Read Leviathan. Just do it. Holly Black is the author of the Tithe trilogy, which has been my favorite trilogy since, oh, ever? Yeah. Cassandra Clare is both hilarious and brilliant. In her first novel, City of Bones, she describes a warlock as looking like "a gay Sonic the Hedgehog." 'Nuff said. Sarah Dessen writes girly mushy romance novels. They're my guilty pleasure. Dianne Wynne Jones. Oh, my god. Have you seen the anime Howl's Moving Castle? Directed by Hayao Miazaki? One of the greatest things to come out of Japan since rain-collecting umbrellas? Yeah. She wrote the book that that movie was loosely based off of. And I say loosely because the book is about 38912098% better. Along with the two sequels. My favorite series by her, however, are The Chronicles of Chrestomanci. They're all so wonderfully British, with Cat and Eric Chant being clever and mischievous. I honestly cannot recommend these books enough. And lastly, Suzanne Collins. Over the weekend, I picked up Hunger Games and made the mistake of thinking that I was going to be productive for the rest of the day. I was literally glued to the book. Hunger Games and it's sequel, Catching Fire are set in a future dystopian world, where once a year two children are picked from each of the 12 Districts to compete in what is essentially a giant death match of badassery. Pseudo-romance, frustration and costumes that are both literally and figuratively flaming ensue. Good God, I cannot wait for the last book in the trilogy.

Well, I think that that's enough of a nerd out for my first blog post. Hope you enjoyed :]
