Summary: Give and take, push and pull, winning and winning
He didn't know when he became so careful about his image, but he really did need to speak with his sister.
"Just let it go," Soeun had told him on the phone, who was obviously trying to protect his sister, Surim, from his overreaction.
"I can't. People are going to begin speculating about us and then we're going to have to fend off rumors and..." he was running out of breath as he rattled on and on excitedly about every possible outcome of being linked to her by 1 degree of separation. That single degree was his sister liking Solim posts on Instagram which, for him, seemed to paint the dawn of a huge and horrible disaster.
"I suppose you're right," she sighed. "Things could get complicated."
"Okay, I'm talking to her about it tonight."
"Just be gentle," Soeun said. "She's excited and happy for us."
"When did you get so relaxed about your image?" He was right. When they first started the show, she was ultra-conservative about her image while he was almost reckless and then, at one point, the tables switched. Was it after that "scandal" or was it after their stint ended? He didn't know, but when he said they were becoming more and more alike, it wasn't an overexaggeration.
He walks through the door of his apartment to find his sister standing at the counter, her elbows on the surface, as she scrolls through her phone.
"You're back?" she asks, not tearing her eyes away from the screen.
"Yeah. Are you busy?"
"Nah, just a few things to do later."
"So..."
"What is it?" she asks, putting her phone down.
"You liked a few things on Instagram..."
"I like a lot of things on Instagram."
He doesn't know how to casually broach the conversation, so instead, he blurts it out, "You liked Solim posts."
"And?"
"Well, people are, umm, well, you know."
His sister looks mildly irritated. "What. What about people?"
"They are drawing us, Soeun and me, together. Speculating, you know?"
Exasperated, Surim sighs, "What's the big deal? You two worked together and continue to support each other even after the show ended and so what if your sister likes Solim posts?"
"Well, it wasn't just any post."
"And again, I ask, what's the big deal? I liked it because you're my brother, although I've often wondered if we're even related, weirdo. I can't help it if I'm one of many people who happens to like 'Solim'." It's true. His sister is by far one of the biggest Solim fans around. "And another thing," she says, her voice raising a decible, "I happen to think she's great. Oh, and yeah, you two are dating in real life."
He lowers his voice, hoping she too will lower her voice, before the neighbors hear. "But no one else knows that."
The subtle act of going to a softer whisper infuriates his sister even more and she continues speaking to him loudly. "She's cool with this. I don't know why you're being such a prude." He is reminded that in his family, the women have ruled supreme. His current predicament indicates that it hasn't changed. In fact, it's gotten much worse now that he's with Soeun, who also wears the pants in their relationship. "Okay, so what do you want me to do? Unlike them?"
He's quiet because he knows that saying anything else contrary to what his sister wishes will result in another tirade, but then again, if he doesn't say anything, she'll be pissed. He's about to answer when her phone rings. She looks down at the screen and a smile breaks out on her face.
"It's Soeun." Now he's going to get it. "Hi!" her sister says happily into the phone that's now cradled at her ear. She shoots him a look over her shoulder and walks to the couch.
His sister adores Soeun. In fact, she's begun to act more like Soeun now than he can ever remember. He felt bad for his sister that she only had him to talk to in their household and didn't have the company of a sister, which is why he let her take the reigns whenever possible. He sees now that probably wasn't a good idea, although it is nice to see her develop a sisterly relationship with his girlfriend.
He walks to his room, leaving them to talk and chuckles to himself thinking that his girlfriend enjoys talking on the phone with his sister and mom more than him. It's just as well. He gets on his computer and starts checking the surf reports and not long after, his sister is at his doorway.
"I'm unliking those posts," she announces. "Oh, and we talked and we both agree that you're being overly dramatic about nothing."
He doesn't turn around and smiles broadly, enjoying a small victory, even if it came after Soeun convinced his sister to unlike the posts.
"I can see you smiling in your reflection, you dork," his sister says, turning on her heels to leave.
His phone rings and he sees that it's Soeun. "Hi," he says.
"Hi. So Surim's okay?"
"Yeah, she told me she's unliking the posts."
"We don't know why it means so much to you that she not draw more lines connecting us together, but whatever."
"What do you mean, 'whatever'?"
"I'm just saying that up until this point, you've been blatantly obvious about our existing relationship outside and after WGM. What's the big deal about your sister liking a Solim post?"
"You won't get mad?"
"That depends. Spill."
He'd been thinking about this a lot, so he took a deep breath and started. "When family gets involved, it almost feels like another layer of privacy and protection is peeled away from reality." She's quiet, no doubt thinking about what he's just said, so he continues. "Remember when we were on WGM and a couple of interviews asked if our families watch the show?"
"Yeah. I said that my family does because they support my career."
"I know. And remember what I said?" She's quiet, thinking back to what he might have said. He helps her out and continues. "I said that my family doesn't watch WGM."
"But Surim said that she and your mom watched it religiously."
"Yes. I know, so despite creating a grand façade of being very open, keeping my family out of interviews is my way of imposing some level of privacy, even it's contrary to the truth."
She's quiet on the other line, probably processing what he's just said and she finally says, "Okay. I can respect that."
He's smiling on the line, "Which is why I've been a bit weird about my sister liking Solim posts."
"Well, I hate to break it to you, but she's a hardcore fan."
"I know. I'm convinced she's joined fan forums using an alias and are feeding them information about us."
Soeun laughs on the other end. "That could very well be true." They are quiet for a moment before she speaks up again. "Oppa, do you think we'll ever release a statement that we're together?"
"Probably when we're on the verge of really getting married."
"Really?"
"Yeah. I'm not a huge fan of press releases confirming or announcing that people are dating. Celebrities don't always stay together. Besides, it's too premature. If we're going to annouce being together, it will be right before our wedding."
"What makes you think I'm going to say yes to marrying you?"
"True. Your favorite answer to me is 'no'."
"Not always."
"I'd say 4 times out of 5." He can imagine her pouting on the other side. "So does that mean I'll need to ask you to marry me 4 times before you finally say yes?"
"I don't know. What if I say yes on the second or third try?"
"Doubt it. You like keeping me in a perpetual state of longing."
"Why don't you give it a try? We've been together for a little over 1 year now and we've told each other we love each other. Don't you want to know?"
"Do you love me, Soeun?" he asks, trying to push the limits with her.
"Yes." He can hear her smile by the way she says yes.
"How much?"
"How much do you think?"
"A lot. More than you've loved all of your ex-boyfriends combined."
"Is that all?"
"You love me more?"
"I love you as much as you love me, times infinity," she says playfully. "That's a lot, right?"
"Well, how long will you love me? Because all that love might run out..."
"50 years."
"That's all? I was thinking that our love would be the stuff of movies. Timeless and enduring."
"I just said 50 years because that's what we said in the show, but obviously, it's forever. I'll love you forever."
He thinks long and hard. Proposing on the phone? She'd want a grand gesture. Or a more intimate one. But he's also very curious about what she might say. He didn't even ask her parents yet, but he wants to know. Then again, he knows she'll say yes. Right?
He clears his throat and closes his eyes before mustering up the words.
"Soeun-ah?"
"Hmm?"
"Kim So Eun? Will you marry me?"
I'm not writing sequel, so feel free to come up with your own ending . Have a great day!
