I NEED NEW BASEBALL PANTIES*

Sep 28, 2011 23:41

So when was the last time that the last day of the season was this exciting?

So we've got both Wild Cards and a batting title up for grabs? With none of those teams playing each other? That's six games to watch today.

Reds at Mets: Jose Reyes started the day with a .336 (.3358, 180-for-536), and led off the game with a bunt single. He was promptly pulled for a pinch runner, as he had stated that if he went 1-for-1, he wanted to come out. Cue confusion when I saw it happen. Reyes ended the season 181-for-537, which is .337. Ryan Braun would have to go 3-for-4 to pass Reyes, a feat that's not nearly impossible when you're .335 on the season. David Wright was pulled in the fourth inning, and by the end of the game, the Mets were flaunting only one player who was on a major league roster at the beginning of the season (Willie Harris), but they still won, 3-0.

Red Sox at Orioles: The Red Sox jumped out to an early lead thanks to a few singles, but Baltimore came back in the bottom half of the third, and went ahead 2-1. The Red Sox scored in each of the next two innings, including a solo shot by Dustin Pedroia, to take a 3-2 lead into the seventh. Unfortunately, Baltimore's been hit by rain, and the game has been delayed more than an hour so far. Boston's still winning 3-2, but they need to finish the game because.... Edit: the game went back underway but the Orioles tied the game with two doubles. There are two outs, but Baltimore's the home team! ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?! Walk-off single.

Yankees at Rays: While the Yankees jumped out to a very early, very comfortable five-run lead after an inning and a half, and tacked on two more for insurance, Tampa made the impossible comeback, scoring six runs against the Yankees in the bottom of the eighth to come within a run. Down to their last strike, Dan Johnson hit his second home run of the year over the right field wall to tie the game. They're currently in the bottom of the [s]tenth[/s] twelfth. The Rays completed the comeback and beat the Yankees 8-7/12 to secure their playoff berth.

So I just realized that's four of the five teams in the AL East. ... Sorry, Toronto. XD Hockey season starts next week, though, it'll be oka-- wait, Maple Leafs. Shit. ... So how's planning for AN '12 going? 8D

Phillies at Braves: Similar to the Yankees blowing their lead in the last at-bat, the Braves did the same. They were up 3-1 going into the seventh, and 3-2 going into the ninth. A sac fly off of Chase Utley's bat tied the game, and they're in the thirteenth. Edit: the Phillies scored a run in the fourteenth to win, so the Braves have been eliminated.

Cardinals at Astros: St. Louis dominated this game, scoring five in the first inning to support Chris Carpenter, who threw a two-hit, complete game shutout of the Astros. They live to see another day, either as the Wild Card or for the Wild Card. And finally....

Pittsburgh at Milwaukee: The outcome of this game didn't matter, of course, because the Brew Crew had already clinched the NL Central, and Pittsburgh is, well, Pittsburgh. The real reason people were watching this game, of course, is to see what Ryan Braun would do. And what he did was... nothing. Braun started at .335 (.3345, 180-for-559), but went 0-for-4, dropping to .332 on the season, giving Reyes the batting title.

I REPEAT: JOSE REYES IS THE 2011 NATIONAL LEAGUE BATTING CHAMPION! :'D

The Brewers won 7-3, and that's good, but it kinda blows for Braun, who, I'm sure, expected he'd get at least one hit today!

tl;dr versions:
•The Mets won, but it's not like that mattered, Jose got another hit and ended at .337. In Milwaukee, the Brewers also won, but that didn't matter either. Ryan Braun didn't hit anything at all, so he fell to .332, and Reyes won the NL batting title, the first for a Met. :D

•The Yankees blew a seven-run lead against Tampa. This doesn't matter for the Yankees, but it matters for Tampa who could win the Wild Card or go home, depending on what Boston does. Boston is [s]winning by a run going into[/s] tied in the bottom of the ninth; Tampa is tied [s]going into the eleventh[/s] in the bottom of the twelfth. If they both win or both lose, there is a one-game playoff for the Wild Card spot tomorrow. If one wins and the other loses, the winning team advances to the playoffs. BOSTON LOST, so if the Rays manage a win, they advance. If they lose, there's a playoff game tomor-- GET THE FUCK OUTTA HERE, they just hit a home run. Tampa advances!

•The Cardinals were badass and whooped Houston 8-0. The Phillies, like the Yankees, are also in the playoffs for certain, but the Braves, like the Rays, must win to keep their playoff hopes alive. If they lose, the Cardinals advance. If they win, there is a one-game playoff for the NL Wild Card tomorrow. ... WAIT A SECOND Philly just went ahead! A walk and two singles brought in their fourth run. Okay, Atlanta, you know what you have to do! unfortunately, have lost. St. Louis advances to the playoffs, and will face Philly in the NLDS.

The one-game playoffs would have screwed up the post-season schedule, which is meant to start Friday. The Division Series would have gotten pushed back a day and been thrown out of whack. And Selig wants to open up the playoffs to ten teams next year so that this'll happen for sure? Oh, how cute. ♥ ... I hate November baseball.

This post will be edited with some cross-outs when the games are over. LOL Figures that the second I post a game ends, and I have to edit, and as I'm editing, they all end at once. What the holy hell.

And while I'm quite cheesed about Boston missing the playoffs (one strike. One. FUCKING. Strike. Shut up, jennybenz, I can hear you laughing from here. XD), um, my baby won the batting title, so it's okay. :D I'm also kinda disappointed that, for games that were so close, both Wild Cards were decided tonight! I thought for sure at least one of them would come to a playoff (and I thought it was gonna be Boston/Tampa, not even gonna front).

So! Playoff "predictions," which is in quotes because of biases against certain teams:

St. Louis v. Philly - UM. GEE.
Arizona v. Milwaukee - Y'know, as much as I like the Diamondbacks, I think the Brew Crew's got this. They lost the season series to Arizona, but only 4-3. It could go either way, really. Maybe I just really like Prince Fielder.
Detroit v. New York - YEAH I TOTALLY WANT THE YANKEES TO WIN BECAUSE YOU KNOW I'M THE BIGGEST YANKEE FAN EVER RIGHT GUYS
Tampa Bay v. Texas - Yeah, we're doin' the Rangers thing. It's Boston's own fault they missed, but Tampa edged 'em out, so.... Let's be serious, though, as long as the Yankees lose, I don't give a fuck who does what in the AL.

Postseason starts Friday! :D

Edit: LJ WHAT IS THIS NEW INTERFACE YOU DIDN'T WARN ME ABOUT. STOP TRYING TO BE FACEBOOK. I liked my fixed-width entry font, thank you very much, and I liked that I didn't have to scroll through the entire post when I wanted to edit not-the first one! I mean, thanks for fixing the middle-of-the-line thing, but ... Courier, please. Much easier to see. Thanks. This looks like rich text and I'm confused and I really hope the HTML still works when I'm done.

Anyway, point of the edit: I will recap Tuesday's game tomorrow. No baseball happening, and should be nothing else special, so... that's that. Also, I think it's pretty obvious what my third NYCC costume's gonna be now, joo know?

*Note: I do not actually own baseball panties.

baseball: oh yeah i like boston too, baseball: postseason, baseball: phuck the phillies, baseball: new york stankees, baseball: metsrabble, youtube
