...to be finished by danielle.
A new day in a new school, a fresh start. A chance to throw away who you were two years ago and just be known for who you are today. Natasha couldn’t wait. She didn’t have the greatest reputation back at her old school; she was ready to start new.
She walked in the doors of Richard White High School in Golden Valley, NJ with perfect posture and a good head on her shoulders. She was ready for everything that would come her way, or so she thought. She knew exactly how she wanted her image to be perceived and exactly how to make a strong first impression. However, she was not prepared for the looks that she got from all of the students.
Natasha is African American; back in her old town more than half of the population was African American so it was never an issue. However, in Golden Valley, it was just about as hard to find a black person as it was to find a needle in a haystack. She didn’t feel that fresh start as she had longed for; instead, she felt as if she were immediately rejected, for no reason other than the color of her skin.
“We don’t want your kind here!” called some wise-cracker boys, “Go back to the ghetto!”
Not only did Natasha feel isolated, she was in fear. Her heart jumped out of her body when she felt a hand on her shoulder.
“Hi!” said a kind voice, “My name is Tom. Tom Martini. Welcome to Richard White High. I’m the ambassador for new students so I’ll be showing you your way around.”
Tom introduced Natasha to the school and explained how the students whom were mean to her early were simply jejune and not worth her getting upset over and Natasha was no longer scared of this new environment. However, then Bob Brown, a senior and five times bigger than Tom came over.
“I’m the sergeant general around these halls and you better watch out. I’ve never hit a girl before but I have no problem getting the cheerleading squad on your tail!”
Bob then walked away with a very funny, quick little walk and Natasha couldn’t help but giggle.
“I WARNED YOU!” screamed Bob as he stormed off, “The squad is going to be in the parking lot at 6:00 tomorrow night, beware!”
“You shouldn’t have done that,” said Tom, “I, um, you never met me before.”
Natasha was alone again. Threatened by the toughest guy in school, Bob Brown, and discarded by the ambassador, Tom Martini. She was in a quagmire; should she go to the parking lot and be beaten or should she stay away and be mocked?
The time passed faster than a speeding bullet and it was time for Natasha to meet the squad. She had only one hope of surviving, and it didn’t look promising. The squad approached with tough looks on their faces and the captain came forward from the others.
“So, um, hey there. What’s your problem?” as she laughed out loud, “Why are you so black and stupid?”
“We don’t want your kind here at Rich White High!” screamed another cheerleader.
“What’s going on here?” said the voice of a man approaching the scene, “my name is Martin Luther King Jr. and my brothers and sisters did not work long, hard days in the fields of the white man to all these years later still be treated with the respect of an ugly puppy. Now you leave my niece, Natasha, alone because I HAVE A DREAM that one day, a black girl can enter a school filled with all white students and be judged by the color of her character, not of her skin!”
Everyone was frozen, time had stopped, and no one in the group had a pulse.
