Remembering 1999
[So I wrote this up and posted it to ontd_football on the actual anniversary on Friday, but then I started doing other stuff and by the time I remembered that I'd forgotten to post this here, Imageshack was dealing with the hacking problem so the whole post would have been messed up anyways, so I didn't post it, and then I didn't remember until now. Point is, just pretend like it's July 10th, because that's when it all went down.]
10 years ago today, the US Women's National Team beat China on penalty kicks to win the 1999 Women's World Cup.
I was 9 years old and about to enter fourth grade. This day remains one of the most vivid memories of my childhood. It's the first soccer game I remember watching, and a huge part of the reason I love soccer so much now. It's the entire reason behind my immense love for US Soccer. These women weren't just a team to me- they were an inspiration. I have a copy of All-American Girls, a book published just before the 1999 WWC, sitting on my desk right now, and it's one of the most well-loved books I own. I know their life stories, how they got to be the players they are, and they were just so inspiring to me. I kept playing because of them, even though I sucked at soccer. And out of the success of the 99 WWC came the WUSA, where I finally had a hometown team to support. I'd reminisce about the Atlanta Beat here, but there's just too much to say. Plus, this post isn't about the Beat. This post is about all these women, who deserve all the respect in the world. They changed the way women's soccer is treated in this country. So thank you, ladies. I wouldn't be the same without you.
The quality of this video is so shitty, but it's set to "We Are The Champions" and I teared up watching it so it's totally worth it.
