Aston Villa played Sunderland in the Carling Cup today, and the game went into a penalty shootout after ending 0-0, with Brad Guzan saving a penalty in normal time. Villa won the shootout 3-1, with Brad saving not one, not two, but THREE of Sunderland's penalties.
"[Martin O'Neill] raced across the pitch towards his number two - remembered he needed to shake the hand of his opposite number - before tearing off to bearhug the delighted spot-kick king." -
match report Martin O'Neill paid tribute to Brad Guzan's spot-kick heroics, insisting: "I almost expected him to save them."
The "euphoric" Villa boss also thanked the claret and blue supporters for travelling up in their droves to support the team in the tough clash with the Black Cats.
The USA ace saved four penalties - one during normal time and three in the shoot-out - as Villa clinched a place in the League Cup quarter-finals.
And MON said: "We're all euphoric - none more so than Mr Guzan.
"It was just a fantastic performance from him and naturally I am delighted to have got through.
"He has been doing it for some time really. I just think he's going to be a great goalkeeper. He has got everything and he is as brave as they come.
"Obviously at this minute, there's also Brad Friedel who has turned in some tremendous performances for us as he has done for quite some considerable time overall. He is close to 200 consecutive games in the Premier League, which in itself is terrific."
