It took Yuuri a moment to realize anything was different. He’d been walking down an unfamiliar corridor in the local noble’s castle, balanced carefully on his special high-heeled shoes. His mother had gone all-out in dressing him up for the ball, even though he (or she, as the invitation read) had only been invited as a formality, so that the lord would look good in the eyes of their relatively forward-thinking region’s populace. It was still obvious that no one really wanted half-breeds there, and he’d needed an escape before long, even though it was still early in the day. But, the longer he walked, the more apparent it became that something wasn’t quite right-hadn’t the carpets been a different color just the other minute?
He stopped short when he noticed something impossible. A tapestry was hanging from the wall lining the corridor. On its own this would have hardly been remarkable, and yet the insignia weaved into it was completely foreign to him. He knew the family crest of the lord all too well, inscribed as it was on every letter he sent and shown off on every corner of his castle. There was no mistaking it! At some point on his walk, Yuuri had ended up in a different castle. There had to be some sort of odd power at work. Panicking internally, he turned on his heel and attempted to retrace his steps. But, even when he could swear he’d followed them all the way to where he'd started, the castle never seemed to change back. Exhausted from walking so much in the heavy skirts of his best dress, he stopped to catch his breath, looking about anxiously. What would he do if someone found him and thought he was an intruder?
