Day 55, Morning

Mar 20, 2010 01:06

For as much as he had to drink last night (not much by Shin Makoku standards, but plenty by his), his night had passed restlessly, instead of simply passed out as he had expected. The alcohol in his system had amplified his dreams, making them vivid and seemingly real, but mostly confusing. Very confusing. It was as if he was reliving the previous ( Read more... )

Yozak had readily taken the potion Anissina had given him the night before, and he had quickly perked up enough to head down to get some breakfast. It was about halfway there though that his stomach started doing flips and a sharp pain was quickly strumming in his head. He didn't know if it was a side effect from the potion or if the potion just hadn't worked and this was his hangover coming back. Either way he felt pretty awful. Coughing violently he paused to lean against the wall and take the time to steady himself.

Gwendal had wandered for a bit, not paying attention to where he was headed as he tried to calm himself down. His foot still hurt since he had probably overused it yesterday. He cursed leaving his cane behind in his hurried retreat from his room.

A harsh cough echoed through the hallway, pulling his attention from himself to whomever was making such a terrible racket. As he rounded a corner, he saw his roommate leaning against the wall, hacking up a lung.

"Yozak? Are you okay?"

A few more coughs and he slowly nodded his head. "I'll be fine. I just need a minute. It's my own fault I feel like this anyway."

Gwendal put his arm around Yozak's shoulder, hoping to steer him back to 'their' room, even though he himself was reluctant to go back there just yet. "Did you get drunk after Nissi and I left you last night? I thought you were going to cut down."

Suddenly, a new thought occurred to him and he reversed directions. "Yozak, you weren't injured in the sparring, were you? Come on, you need to see Gisela. She'll help you. Lean on me, but not too heavily. My foot's killing me. I forgot my cane this morning."

He blinked a few times, staring at Gwendal. Last night? He had been around Gwendal last night? And Nissi? No that was Anissina, wasn't it? Hadn't they had a big conversation about that? He certainly had been even drunker than he thought.

"Your foot?" He asked dumbly, trying not to put too much weight onto the other man. "The sparring?" He was feeling more and more confused.

"Did you get knocked in the head? What's the matter with you?" asked Gwendal irritably. "Oh, sure, it's not your foot so you don't have to worry about it, but you did carry me around the castle looking for Gisela. Have you forgotten that too? I can sort of understand that, but Yozak, great Shinou, man! You defeated (ic)Gwendal in a sword fight in front of an entire arena full of people. How in this world or the next could you have forgotten that? I didn't think the smile would ever leave your face last night." Gwendal shook his head. What exactly had Yozak done last night after he had left them?

Had he been thinking right it would've been clear Gwendal was thinking about another Yozak. But his mind didn't feel up to working that information out and he just stared blankly at Gwendal.

"I... Don't think I did that. I just drank..." He finally supplied.

Gwendal pulled to a stop and stared back, cocking his head. Something was off, but he couldn't quite put his finger on it. All sorts of possibilities crossed his mind, but only one made any sense. Maybe his friend had drank too much later on in the evening and and had fallen, hit his head and was experiencing amnesia. "Yozak," he started cautiously, "you do know your name is Yozak, don't you? And I'm Gwendal. You know that, right? Did you ... did you black out last night? From maybe drinking too much? Maybe hit your head or something?" Anything to explain his roomie's odd behavior. He just seemed different somehow.

"Yes, I'm Yozak," he snapped. he was tired of everyone not believing him. First Anissina and the whole doubles and new world thing and now this. Wait. Doubles... Hm... He rubbed the side of his head as if it would help clear the haze from his mind.

"Down, boy. Easy there, big fella. I'm only trying to help. No need to bite my head off. That's (ic)Gwendal's job, although I have to say," and his mouth was off and running, "he's not so bad to work with. I can see how he earned all of those wrinkles as I really don't envy him his job. For me, it's kind of nice to have the pressure off, although I do miss the excitement of my old job. I need the adrenalin rush from time to time, you know. I reserve judgment on the new Gunter though. Odd man, but then both Gunter's are rather unusual, don't you think? You knew the original. Do you think this is really him?" Oh, Shinou! What if the amnesia kept him from remembering the original Gunter? Gwendal crossed his fingers.

Doubles... originals... Oh! Finally it made sense. Hopefully.

"I think... You have the wrong Yozak." His stomach lurched and he squeezed his eyes shut, willing his stomach to stop it's assault on him... and when had that burning sensation in his legs started?

"I need to sit down." He started moving forwards to... anywhere that would have seats.

"Wrong ..." It took a minute to sink in, to remember that there was another Yozak that he hadn't met. "Oh."

Gwendal pointed to the double doors leading to an atrium. "Come on, my new friend Yozak, you need some air. No wonder you didn't remember what you did yesterday. You weren't you. I mean, you were you, just not the you I thought you were."

Gwendal had been in bad shape this morning when he had left his room, but he realized that this Yozak seemed to be pretty sick. It made him grateful that his problem had just been a bad dream. He didn't think that the man in front of him would be throwing penguins any time soon.

Gwendal's jumbled explanation didn't help much but he just nodded along, heading in the direction Gwendal pointed to, pushing through the doors.

They went through the doors, ending up in an open air courtyard. Gwendal maneuvered Yozak towards one of the benches. "There's an open cistern here that you could use should you feel the need to empty your stomach. I believe it washes out into a field stream beyond the castle walls." If the air didn't help, Gwendal would search out Gisela. He was quickly becoming one of her most frequent visitors, only this time it wouldn't be for him.

He nodded slightly, sinking down onto the bench, before taking a deep breath.

The air did seem to help a bit as he felt a little of the haziness clear and he began going over their conversation. "So... My double won something?"

Watching Yozak carefully, Gwendal saw some color start to come back into his face. He breathed a short sigh and relaxed against the back of the bench. "Yes, he did. At the festival yesterday, he bested my double in a sparring match." Chuckling, he added, "He also cost me a lot of money."
