Dude. I totally have a rant to post. This soon.
I just ran into this blog entry on some site. I was actually looking for downloadable game cutscenes. And it was really a random find. But there was this person ranting about how absolutely horrible it is to have cutscenes in games. I won't give links, or names, or anything. It doesn't matter. But this person said that cutscenes are apparently bad because they bore the player and take him/her out of the game's world where they had been immersed through playing. From comments around the entry, and further looking into this... I see that apparently this is a classic topic of the gaming world. o_O
I've been playing games for years. Since before we even had our own family computer (which we bought when I was seven). Well, yes, indeed, I don't have any other gaming platforms, but that doesn't mean I haven't been through quite the number of games. The variety on PC alone is quite amazing. So, my question is... How in the world did I not know about this before? I guess it's just my lack of interest in gaming communities, since I just play them and feel next to no need to discuss my games outside a circle of friends, or some role-playing community based around the respective game. But in my small world, I'd never ever seen anyone complain about CUTSCENES, of all things!
I'm not bashing the person or anything. xD I don't give a single damn what someone who-knows-how-many miles away thinks and posts on the internet. And even if I did, that's the person's opinion and they're entitled to it.
I'm just shocked. This was something... quite beyond my imagination. o_o The thought of a game without cutscenes and just play, play, play, fighting, puzzles, more fighting... makes me shudder. xDD The first thing that pops into my head is a Baldur's Gate II - Shadows of Amn without that well-known post-first-dungeon scene where Imoen is taken along with Irenicus. Without that... well, there goes the main quest. What then? The only reason I play long games is the story, and without those insert scenes where the player has no control, there just... couldn't be one. Well, there would be, but just... not as complex. There's no way to surprise the player with a twist if you give him or her control of everything.
I understand the person's point of view though. He was saying that he doesn't care about the cutscenes and just wants to get to bashing stuff. But I'm the exact opposite. For me, a game without a solid storyline would be only a basic and linear piece of crap not worth playing. xD I hope people who think that way are a minority, for the sake of my peace of mind. I'm quite addicted to games and it'd be sad to lose them. xDD
Thankfully, my preferred genre is RPG, and I don't see that working without a story any time soon.
