Pairing Meme - Geass and Double-0
So, a while ago, I kind of auto-tagged myself to fill this in after reading this entry from levyrasputin (hope you don't mind I linked! xD). After starting and not finishing, getting worked up over Japanese homework, forgetting, and other general fails, here it is.
It's a pairing meme, and I'm filling it for Code Geass and Gundam 00. Also, these are all just my opinions, and I'm not trying to push them on anyone. Thank you.
Top 10 Shippings Overall
(Would like to note that I automatically ship anything canon, because that's simply how I... work? xD I'm a canon nazi, so if something is canon I just don't go against it. But below I'm only going to list stuff that appeals to me beyond and regardless of that element.)
Code Geass
1. Lelouch x C.C. -- Can't call this an OTP in itself... since I'm not as obsessed with it as I am with OTPs from other fandoms... but it was definitely my favorite Code Geass pairing. It's the only Lulu-pairing (if you ask me) in which the report between the two characters is completely balanced over time; I don't know, it just gives me that feeling of reciprocal understanding that neither of them has with any other character. So that's why I ship it.
2. Suzaku x Anya -- Oh, God. Don't know how to explain how I got to this. It's just the way their grand total of two (three?) significant moments of interaction clicked for me. I have no idea. There are just sometimes these random things that simply click *instantly* for me, and this was one of them. I did have a bit of an analysis done on it, but no one else seemed to feel the same way in the slightest, so I kind of let it rust in the back of my head. And yeah, not canon, but there's nothing I can do about it. xDD
3. Suzaku x Euphie. -- Favorite character's canon pairing, and that says enough about my bias. xDD I have to admit that's a huge part of why I like the pairing this much, but I'm also sold on the way the two characters think of each other. Something not short of each of them admiring the other and finding some kind of "peace" in the other. Or that's how I saw it.
4. Lelouch x Shirley. -- At first, I rolled my eyes and went "oh great, another schoolgirl crush thing" at this pairing. But... wow, Sunrise. I can't not ship it after how you handled this over time. I'm all for dramatic stuff, and this was... quite possibly one of the best developed relationships I witnessed on screen. Through all the shocks and changes it suffered, almost nothing in it felt fake and... off. That's really rare for me, so I appreciate it a lot.
5. Guilford x Cornelia. -- Here, I think Guilford's character needed a sliiiiight bit more personality to make the pairing a bit more interesting, but since Cornelia has enough for the both of them and scored my second-favorite female character spot, it's okay.
6. Gino x Kallen. -- I liked Gino, and when I sat back to think on it, his personality wasn't that far off from matching Kallen's in a way. So, yeah. If you're a rabid Kallen fan and want to kill me right now for this... lulz. Kthx.
7. Ohgi x Villetta. -- This had its absolutely awesome moments, so I definitely just can't not list it here. But the prolonged homeliness of it kind of stole away part of the charm for me, so that's why it's only so low. Because I'm immature.
8. Xingke x Tianzi. -- The way it was handled in canon, I actually liked this pairing. It's just a childish crush on one side and single-minded loyalty on the other; it could never be an actual relationship, but that's what makes it awesome.
9. Rivalz x Milly. -- Really, they're both in very similar positions if you sit and think about it, and there's just that whole air of loss/misfortune in an it's-okay-I-can-deal-with-this way, relationship-wise, around both characters that I can't help it.
10. Charles x Marianne. -- No, really. Think of it. The 'heartless' emperor of Britannia had a favorite wife, and these people virtually used their own kids and/or disregarded them for their super special awesome so-very-Sunrise-like plan, which they wanted to set in motion together. That's too awesome to not list. xDD
Gundam 00
1. Lyle x Anew. -- My 00TP. Final one, at least. I started off by being one of the people who rolled their eyes at the way this started and especially progressed, but the ending appeased me, and then a rewatch through S2 made me see things from a slightly different angle, and over-analyze them, and there were also a couple of sentences I once saw in a fandom discussion and reflected on later. And now I've just been... sold. Completely.
2. Ribbons x Liu Mei. -- This was actually my first 00TP, before Lyle x Anew grew on me that much. I just love the dysfunctional report these characters have. It was the only pairing in Gundam 00 that simply hit me in the head from the start and didn't have to grow on me in time. My analysis mostly relies on on-screen subtleties and the likes, but I'm hoping to one day post a full, coherent explanation.
3. Neil x Feldt. -- I just love this pairing. I was disappointed about its lack of canonization at first, and focused on other things for a while, but as I thought on it, I saw nuances I hadn't noticed at first, and discovered just how awesome it is. It's firstly in the way Feldt seemed to idolize him as she stalked watched him, whereas on his part it was likely only the concern he'd have shown anyone. And it has much more than that. The reason to love this pairing, for me, is something in the background. Not what they did tell each other, but what they didn't. The idealistic character of the whole thing just gets to me.
4. Setsuna x Marina. -- I'm predicting this: watch Sunrise troll me majorly and reveal in the movies that Setsuna is actually Marina's long-lost brother. I'm not putting it past them. But I like this pairing because, in time, a very complex background that gives itself to tons of analysis has developed between these two characters. There's a bit of a net of... small, interconnected things between them that made me slowly ship this more and more. These two characters rely on each other and give to / take from each other far more than is apparent directly in their interaction. On contrary, it happens more while they're apart. That's what I like about the pairing.
5. Saji x Louise. -- I might be biased by all the character hate these two get from the fans here. It's just how I am. When something is hated, I start slowly liking it more just for that reason. And there's also the fact that this pairing is the epitome of canon. You can hardly get more canon than that. But also, there were some moments on both sides that made me like this because the characters truly grew, both with each other and separately. Each of them... gave of himself/herself to/for the other at some point.
6. Revive x Healing. -- There's no concrete base to this, really, and I think I just ship it because I'm a fantard of Innovators (or Innovades, and whatever other spelling variants I've seen for this) in general. But these two got to spend a lot of their screen time together, and I guess that just made me toss them in together automatically, or something. I also have a theory about Innovators in general which places them at completely opposite ends, and so they're another of those 'complementary' things I seem to have.
7. Allelujah x Marie. -- This might have gone higher in my list if Allelujah had been shown having even the slightest memory of Marie before Soma was actually tossed in. I mean, for something that marked him so distinctly to be believable in that status, it needed a background like that. But aside from that shortcoming, which for me just took away some of the credibility, I think it was pretty well-done, and one of those things you just can't think to not ship, because they... make such a difference / mean too much to each other. Each of them is the other's pillar of existence in a way, and you just can't split that.
8. Lichty x Christina. -- The ending bought me. xDD And I have to quote levyrasputin on the "normal people" thing. That was seriously very refreshing.
9. Billy x Sumeragi. -- This is just... poor guy. xDD I felt sorry for him throughout most of the whole plot, so of course I was happy to ship right along when it finally happened. Although I'd have shot Sumeragi if I'd been him. Rofl!
10. Klaus x Shirin. -- I tracked this with a vague trace of interest along the series. Not enough stuff happened to it to make me ship actively and truly put feeling into it, but I thought it was interesting, and pretty nice for a change of scene.
Top 5 Love Triangles
(For me triangle does not imply that all three characters can happily form a pairing. No. One of them has to 'fall' from the pairing, eventually, whether it actually happens or not. For me, a triangle implies an element of 'choice', and of competition. I hope that makes sense.)

1. Lelouch x Euphie x Suzaku. -- Yes, I know Euphie is Lulu's half-sister, but if you ask me there were some very strong hints in canon that Euphie was the first girl Lelouch actually liked, as a kid, in a platonic-to-the-extreme sort of way. And that's also the only way I can like this or even think of it as a triangle. Taken further... no, thanks. But Euphie was portrayed as pretty similar to Nunnally (Nunnally is continuing Euphie's will in R2, pretty much xD). And the way it's made out, it seems they're the type of girl Lelouch has some sort of weakness for (as in, he'd actually listen to them), and I also got a slight bit of an impression, from Lelouch's side, that he felt like Suzaku beat him in a way because Euphie (most likely) was/grew closer to him than to Lelouch (which is repeated, in a bit of a different way due to various factors, with Nunnally herself in R2). And Lelouch is a pimp, so he gets a bit of romance-hint with everyone there. And I'm ranting again. xD
2. C.C. x Lelouch x Kallen/Shirley. -- No matter which of the two is in the final position in this, it's the same way. There were extremely small moments in which C.C. showed a vague, passing interest in Lelouch's exact report with other female characters in the series. I found that interesting and also a small part of what ultimately cemented their own report.
3. Mao x C.C. x Lelouch. -- There's no question here about who C.C. would choose (and did choose), but I thought it was interesting to have someone else for whom C.C. actually cared about in the past show up (because it's obvious she was a little affected by Mao's presence) and test her new allegiance.
4. Lloyd x Lancelot/Guren x Rakshata. -- I put this for the lulz. xDD Sorry, couldn't help myself.

1. Ribbons x Liu Mei x Regene. -- I expressed my reasons for this in a MSN chat with
nebulous_chaos at one point. There were a few markers I noticed on screen that made me ship it this way too. Namely, I think that Liu Mei was an actively contributing factor to the gap of mutual dislike formed between Ribbons and Regene. They have more than one instance in which they briefly discuss her. And I couldn't help but zoom on that one final conversation Ribbons and Regene had about her, in which Ribbons has that "You've been seeing her a lot lately," moment, a line that also pointedly erased the smirk and the "Me? Never," attitude from Regene's face.
2. Graham x Gundam x Setsuna. -- Tossed in for the lulz. Think of the arguments over who gets to keep/become Gundam. Rofl.

2. Lloyd x Cécile. -- This goes in nice other choices for me because I didn't actually see it there very much... but it would be nice. There was a bit of a family-like atmosphere there, but too bad it didn't have quite all the substance it took to convince me enough to be listed in "Top 10" above. D:
3. Lloyd x Milly. -- I dunno, I thought that if they'd actually stuck to it, it might have worked. In a bit of an artificial way to the end, it's true, but neither of them really had anything to lose, which made them a nice complement to each other for me.
4. Milly x Nina. -- This was mostly triggered by Milly's motherliness when it came to Nina, and just some vague background vibe, and I dunno. It's not actually there, with any canon hints (not even weak ones) or anything, but I just wouldn't have minded if things had taken that turn.
5. Suzaku x C.C. -- This is unusual, I know. It got only a very fleeting moment of interest from me towards the end of R2, triggered by C.C. noting to Suzaku that they were similar, which he denied. And also their background conversations about Lelouch, being the only two people close to him / who knew what he was doing at the time. So it's sort of an in-the-same-situation thing.

1. Tieria x Feldt. -- I'll agree with levyrasputin on this one, and also, what actually sold me to this was the I'm home manga one-shot which had some pretty interesting Tieria-Feldt interaction.
2. Lyle x Feldt. -- I like this only in certain pretty restricted contexts, and I did have an idea for a fic based on this, but I'm not sure if I'll ever get to write it. There are a couple of interesting perspectives I'd like to study here, though. But that's kind of it.
3. Tieria x Sumeragi. -- I don't know. For some reason, I wouldn't mind it. o_o
4. Andrei x Louise. -- Hey, it didn't actually happen, and it won't, but it had a bit of a nice feel to it. xDD

So, yeah, I know it's there, but as this title says, I "don't feel what everyone else is feeling". Sorry.
2. Orange x Villetta. -- There are still people shipping this out there, and to me... srsly... wtf?
3. Rolo x Nunnally. -- Seriously, that just ruins Rolo's character for me, and... everything. Just my opinion, I don't know why people go "aw, so sweet!" over this.

There were extremely small moments in which C.C. showed a vague, passing interest in Lelouch's exact report with other female characters in the series. I found that interesting and also a small part of what ultimately cemented their own report.

1. Ribbons x Liu Mei x Regene. -- I expressed my reasons for this in a MSN chat with
nebulous_chaos at one point. There were a few markers I noticed on screen that made me ship it this way too. Namely, I think that Liu Mei was an actively contributing factor to the gap of mutual dislike formed between Ribbons and Regene. They have more than one instance in which they briefly discuss her. And I couldn't help but zoom on that one final conversation Ribbons and Regene had about her, in which Ribbons has that "You've been seeing her a lot lately," moment, a line that also pointedly erased the smirk and the "Me? Never," attitude from Regene's face.
2. Graham x Gundam x Setsuna. -- Tossed in for the lulz. Think of the arguments over who gets to keep/become Gundam. Rofl.

2. Lloyd x Cécile. -- This goes in nice other choices for me because I didn't actually see it there very much... but it would be nice. There was a bit of a family-like atmosphere there, but too bad it didn't have quite all the substance it took to convince me enough to be listed in "Top 10" above. D:
3. Lloyd x Milly. -- I dunno, I thought that if they'd actually stuck to it, it might have worked. In a bit of an artificial way to the end, it's true, but neither of them really had anything to lose, which made them a nice complement to each other for me.
4. Milly x Nina. -- This was mostly triggered by Milly's motherliness when it came to Nina, and just some vague background vibe, and I dunno. It's not actually there, with any canon hints (not even weak ones) or anything, but I just wouldn't have minded if things had taken that turn.
5. Suzaku x C.C. -- This is unusual, I know. It got only a very fleeting moment of interest from me towards the end of R2, triggered by C.C. noting to Suzaku that they were similar, which he denied. And also their background conversations about Lelouch, being the only two people close to him / who knew what he was doing at the time. So it's sort of an in-the-same-situation thing.

1. Tieria x Feldt. -- I'll agree with levyrasputin on this one, and also, what actually sold me to this was the I'm home manga one-shot which had some pretty interesting Tieria-Feldt interaction.
2. Lyle x Feldt. -- I like this only in certain pretty restricted contexts, and I did have an idea for a fic based on this, but I'm not sure if I'll ever get to write it. There are a couple of interesting perspectives I'd like to study here, though. But that's kind of it.

But I knew it was inevitable, so I could stand it. But it's become waaaaaay too popular, and that bugs me. Why is this more popular than the actual canon pairings? Also: it so wouldn't be this liked if Tieria had been a female character, clean and simple. You know it's true. So yeah.
2. Ali x Setsuna. -- Obligatory rape pairing of the fandom. Wtf is up with these things? Always hated them, and always will.
3. Alejandro x Ribbons. -- Exactly the same as above.
4. Allelujah x Hallelujah. -- Way too popular pairing for something that's not even possible, given the fact that they're not even two different personae, per se.
