[series]: Tales of Eternia
[character]: Farah Oersted
[character history / background]:

"In-fer-ia! Ce-les-tia! BOOM!" Ominous words to begin with...

Farah is a hardheaded farm girl hailing from the small town of Rasheans. For the most part, she, Keele and Reid are childhood friends, and the game implies a light romantic relationship between her and Reid. When Meredy crash-lands in Inferia, Farah doesn't even hesitate for a moment to help her -- she even goes so far as to not only leave her home village, but accept banishment in order to assist the mysterious girl from Celestia.

Her own backstory intertwines heavily into the plot -- when she, Reid and Keele were younger, she somehow managed to snag the key to the sealed-off areas of the Regulus Knoll, a place that the village elder -- her father -- deemed forbidden to enter. Being the bossy daredevil that she was, she refused to listen. She managed to dare Reid and Keele into exploring the area to look for "star fragments", with disastrous results. At some point during their exploration, a sealed evil within was unleashed; when her father arrived to get the children, he ended up getting attacked by the sealed evil -- Nereid -- and was turned into a monster. As a result, much of Rasheans was destroyed and countless lives lost, including both Reid's and Farah's families. The whole incident has left Farah in a crushing state of guilt and regret since.

Later on, it's discovered that Farah's dare had nothing to do with Nereid's release -- the seal simply wasn't designed to hold back the evil for an extended amount of time, and would have been released anyway. It was just pure coincidence that it came undone after the children visited the knoll -- it doesn't stop Farah from being the selfless girl we all know and love, though. If anything, it only hardens her determination to not only prevent another Rasheans from happening again, but also to give her the inner strength she needs to fight and to protect the ones she cares about the most.

[character abilities]:

Like a famed boxer once said... float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.

Farah's very skilled in all manner of martial arts -- not only can she use her prowess to inflict decent damage on her enemies, she can also link her combos and special attacks into each other and bring out more pain that way. She also can heal, though her powers are very limited in that regard. She's more of an offensive type than most, really, and even then she really plays more of a supporting role in battle.

When she's not kicking ass and taking names, she's also an extremely skilled cook, Reid's praises about her cooking aside.

[character personality]:

If there's one word that can be used to describe Farah, it's "cheerful" -- being very optimistic and helpful, no one can stay down when they're in her presence for long, and she also encourages her friends whenever they start doubting themselves. She's also a mediator, and will try to find a middle ground solution for everyone to make everyone happy. Overall, she's a great leader -- even though Reid's the main character, Farah's the driving force behind the party, encouraging and cheering everyone on during their journey. Farah also possesses a very strong resolve and very supportive friends, which make it nearly impossible to shatter her dedication and will, and will move forward with everything she has to reach her goal.

Despite all this, she harbors the fear of failing those whom she's close to, or failing those whom she goes out of the way to help. She can't bear to watch people in front of her suffer -- this and the lingering guilt from her involvement in the Regulus Knoll incident is why she's so hung up on helping out as many people as she can. She also tends to be rash and jump into a situation without fully understanding the situation, which often makes matters all the worse. She can also be very stubborn at times, though she does know enough to let her friends speak their peace and willingly listen to them even if they'll say something she doesn't want to hear. She's good-natured and trusting to a fault -- her willingness to help anyone with their problems leaves her easy to exploit, and her line of thinking can also be considered too naive for her own good.

Overall, though, Farah is a very kind-hearted and thoughful girl whose optimism and determination keeps her from giving up easily, and she can be counted upon to help other people and do the right thing.

[journal post]:

[The recording starts with the tail end of a loud scream followed by a splash. After a few minutes, a soft groan and the rustling of wet fabric can also be heard.]

...haaaaaaugh! What's the idea, throwing me into a fountain like this!? I could've... gotten... hurt...?

...where... am I? This... doesn't look anywhere at all like Rasheans...

[There's the sounds of footsteps and harumphing as the girl gets up and out of the fountain, followed by footsteps on cobblestones.]

...Reid? Are you here? Reeeid!

[Her voice is a mixture of both confusion and worry.]

Ooooh... what happened? Is this supposed to be a dream? I... don't recognize this place at all. Reeeeeid! Where are you?

[She sounds more distressed now, but there's also a bit of exasperation laced in her tone, too.]

Honestly, Reid, this isn't funny anymore... besides, you were the one who's been nagging me for eggbear meat... not to mention we're supposed to visit Keele and Meredy in Celestia, too...

[Then, a squeak of curiosity. The camera on the device is jostled as it points up to a green-haired girl staring down the lens.]

What is this, anyway? It... doesn't look like anything I've seen before. Keele would probably be interested in this, I'm sure...

And.... if this is a dream, why does it feel so real? Ooh... I hope everyone's all right, even if I don't know just what's going on here...

[third person / log sample]:

It had happened again.

Farah sat up in bed, gasping and panting heavily as sweat rolled down her brow. The blanket was clenched tightly in her hands, and her heart was racing. She nervously glanced around the room -- to her relief, Meredy was still sound asleep. Not only that, the lack of noise from the boys' room, other than that of Reid's snoring, indicated that they were still sound asleep. She sighed; she really didn't want them to wake up and see her like this, especially this late in the night when they were supposed to be resting. Huffing a little under her breath, she fell back against the pillows, staring up at the ceiling.

She wasn't sure how, or even why, but for the past few nights the dreams in her head had drifted towards that awful night so many years ago. Playing in her sleep like a broken record, haunting her and draining away her confidence and her health. The wretched events at Regulus Knoll that led to all this pain and bloodshed in the first place. The evil that she accidentally unleashed, thanks to her stubbornness and overconfidence.

Star fragments be damned, if she could she would've stopped herself from going in in the first place.

She could still hear the screams and smell the blood. See the horrendous images burned into her memory. She shuddered, sighing as she wrapped the blanket tighter around herself. What was wrong with her? She normally didn't dwell on this for this long! Still, it was as if her memory was forcing her to remember that day, to recall all that was lost thanks to her -- all the good deeds, cheerfulness and heroism in the world couldn't keep these nightmares at bay. Even now, it still pained her to think about those days long gone.

"I'm sorry, everyone..."

She knew they couldn't hear her -- there was no way that they could respond. Still, it gave her some sort of comfort, this particular ritual. The pain still weighed heavily on her mind, and now, as they were all drawing closer to Regulus Tomb, the place where the incident had happened, she grew more nervous. What would happen if Meredy knew? Did Reid and Keele still hate her, harbor feelings of resentment towards her for what had transpired because of her selfishness? No doubt, she thought that it would be justified if they did. A pained chuckle escaped her lips as she rolled over in bed, closing her eyes.

What should she do? What else could she do except move on, and hope that things worked out for the best? It was what she'd done for the past ten years, and she wasn't about to stop now.

Indeed, she would do what she did every night this happened. Cry herself to sleep, wake up the next morning and put one foot in front of the other. Keep smiling for everyone's sake, protect those she held close and help out anyone who needed it. The next morning, she would be all right, smiling and laughing at everyone's antics, and perhaps get exasperated or annoyed at Reid again for being lazy. It'll be okay, she told herself. I can't keep living my life worrying about what might happen, and be afraid because of what happened in the past, after all... She would carry that guilt and that pain for the rest of her life, but she wouldn't let it stop her. She couldn't -- she had to remain strong for everyone. It was all she could do.

Never once did Farah feel that it got any easier, though.
