Well, this year is turning very interesting indeed. The democrats and republicans have handed the American people the best opportunity to dump the 2-party system that there will likely ever be. They have managed to put forth two presidential candidates that are so vile and repulsive, that we might actually convince a majority to elect a 3rd party candidate.
I think we need to match up liberals and conservatives and make a pledge that one democrat vote AND one republican vote becomes 2 votes for the leading third party candidate. If we can convince people that a vote for the 3rd party is NOT a vote for the opposition, I think we can start a landslide. Early on a lot of people might make the pledge with no intention of keeping it, but I think it can snowball into an actual change in the political process. When people stop believing that a 3rd party candidate CAN'T get elected the political balance of power will be broken for the foreseeable future.
Many people seem to think that a 3rd party option has to come from the bottom up. I disagree. The majority parties could much more effectively crush a slow swelling up from the bottom, but if we start at the top, we sweep the rug out from under them. I foresee a top-down cascade of third party candidates. Far too many for the majority to efficiently silence. So find someone from the other side of the political spectrum, and pledge, together, to tear down the 2-party system.
