SSI
After much thought, I realized that I wouldn't be able to accomplish what I wanted with my limited ability in Perl as a CGI. I concluded that I would have to pass variables into Perl programs and I have no idea how to do that yet. And I still can't figure out how to open files in a seperate directory without an absolute path.
I did find a way to achieve what I wanted with Server Side Includes. So far it works and I don't have to write a seperate Perl program, either. I just need to write one directive and I get what I want.
With this mystery solved, I can now focus on tweaking the layout with CSS to perfection and adding content. Once the rough draft is finished, I'll find a webhost and upload it for the web to see.
