Film Journal 1

Bought Robert Rodriguez' book (Rebel Without a Crew: Or How a 23-Year-Old Filmmaker With $7,000 Became a Hollywood Player) and read the introduction plus 20-some pages. It's interesting. I wouldn't sell my body to science the way he did, but I did like how he said something like, "If you bleed for the money, you'll use it more wisely." A true artist, bleeding for his art.

He has an interesting idea for preparing to write a script. He writes his ideas on index cards, putting the title of the scene on one side and describing the scene on the other. When he knows something is supposed to go between scenes but doesn't quite know what, he leaves blank cards, sometimes putting a quick title like, "Bad guy scene" on the card. I'm going to try that with my feature-length film script when I start writing it.

Before I do a feature, though, I want to start making some shorts. I don't want to, but I might steal scenes from other movies and see if I can get people to reenact them. The sole purpose of that is so I can learn camera angles and such. Maybe I'll steal the scene and shoot it differently, at least I'll be getting some experience. Maybe I'll start saving $40 a week and spend $20 over the weekend; then, with whatever money is left over, either spend it on new tapes, or put it aside for more tapes whenever I finally get enough money. I figure it's going to cost something to learn anything; and, with miniDV tapes fairly cheap, this will be well worth the money.

Right now, there are only going to be a few people seeing the movies, so I figure stealing a song without attaining rights to it will be fine for now. After all, it is for educational purposes.

I'm blessed to have a girlfriend like Renee. She seems really understanding, even if she isn't. I love her; but, at the same time, I really want to do this. I'm not looking for fame or fortune, just doing something that can hopefully bring in some money for a feature. But it seems so impossible. I haven't had a good idea in years, and my dialogue is shit. Am I as creative as I think I am? I don't care, I'm going to start making films and pray the creativity comes back. First things first, we have to get the camera out and play with it to begin learning.

I'm setting a goal: I will shoot a short film over Christmas break, edit it, and have a final product by the time school starts next semester. The first story I'll use is going to be the hitman one. It doesn't have to be accurate, just so long as I learn something from it. What about audio? I haven't thought that far; let's not worry about that yet. Let's try getting something set up and start shooting. I need to find actors. Where? Chris? Hunter? Nick?

Here is a list of what I'll need:
_ Boom pole & mike
_ Good blank gun & blank rounds
_ Briefcase
_ Styrofoam cup
_ Actors (age doesn't really matter right now)
Parts: Hitman, man, woman's voice
_ Script
_ Location
_ Fake blood for squib
_ Compressed air
