Lord help me, I'm finally learning vi. I find myself trying to do :wq to close a Web browser and odd things like that. It's seriously doing bad things to my brain.
Teaching this Unix class has shown me how many things I never learned because they were "hard" that I've just picked up in snippets over the years, like sed and "serious" shell scripting. I find I understand lots of things immediately just because I've used Perl for so long. I can't get used to the idea that 0 is "true," but I try to keep in mind the part of the Unix philosophy that says, "No news is good news."
I love teaching this class and I'm sorry it won't be offered again until next fall. It's a heck of a lot more fun than the PC Hardware class's "Here, memorize this pile of facts."
