We spent several weeks on the mainland. Metro riding in DC, trying to get people to smile. I forgot that people in DC are too suspicious of someone smiling at them on the metro to smile back. We got to hook up with friends in Maryland and beg them to come spend a few solid weeks with us on the island. Then it was grandparent (in-laws) visiting and a flight down to Georgia to stay with my sister and the cousins. My parents and brother also drove down from IL to spread the cheer. And after the first week...well things always get a bit difficult after the first week when you spend close time with people who think you are still the person you were when you lived in their house and acted out all your teenage angst in their presence. There are also a few elephants in the room that no one ever talks about either, but that's family and I don't know anyone who doesn't have issues.
Recovering here and resting and cleaning and soaking up the most beautiful May sunshine and tradewinds you could imagine. My favorite part about coming home is when the plane lands and the flight attendant says "We welcome all who are visiting the islands and for all our kam'aina aboard, welcome home." And oh my gosh! I bought a dozen gardenias on stems last night at the flower shop at Ward Center for ten bucks. Can you imagine the heavenly scent wafting through the house with a vase full to bursting with gardenias?! I wanted only to smell them, all day, but washed the floors anyway. When Imagine came in with black feet from running around without his slippers and I said, "I just washed the floors you know." He immediately sat down and held his feet in the air. "They're not touching!" he proclaimed. Yup...good to be home.
