Alain lay on his bed in his hotel room, staring up and the ceiling and thinking of Krystina. "You know, I really like that girl. And she knew who I was!" He smiled proudly.
Amanda rolled her eyes and moved away from the mirror she'd been admiring herself in, one of her favorite past times. She reached into her suitcase and pulled out her Playboy issue. "I'm sure she doesn't look like this!" She exclaimed, holding up her spread.
"I don't think she'd resort to posing for sleazy men's magazines." He answered, completely uninterested in her photos. He'd been there, done that.
"You jerk!" Amanda growled as she slung the magazine at him. If it got wrecked that was okay, she had about a thousand more copies. In fact, she had a room at home full of them. "You need to get your overly large head out of the clouds and start telling me what this plan is. I want America’s golden boy destroyed. And now!"
"I'm thinking, alright?" He yelled, tossing the magazine back at her. "I know she likes the asshole and saw her friend kissing him, which really upset her. I'm sure we can somehow pit them against each other which should in turn cause problems for him. And in the meantime, I will ease Krystina's pain!"
Amanda shrieked and began to jump up and down, fuming with jealousy. Michael had turned her down but was kissing someone else? This other girl couldn't possibly compare to her, at least not in her eyes. She considered herself God's gift to men and believed they all should bow down at her feet. "I hate him!!! He sucks!!! I hope he drowns!!! Or at least gets his speedo stuck in the pool jet!!!!"
"Here we go again." Alain whispered and got up from the bed." I'm going to call Krystina. You go and do whatever it is you do. Give the mirror my regards." He walked out of the room and shut the door, but nothing could drown out her screeching. She just wouldn't shut up and he often wondered if he should give up his swimming career to invent the Amanda Beard muzzle. The world might appreciate him more!
"Room 805 please." He inquired of the hotel desk.
Back in Room 805…
Krystina yawned and reached over the nightstand to pick up the ringing phone. "Hello?"
"Hi Krystina, it's Alain." He said in a cheerful tone.
"Oh hi." She replied and stretched her arms above her head.
"Would you like to join me for breakfast?" He asked, hopeful for a positive response.
She looked over to the bed across the room and saw Emma still sound asleep. All night, her mind had been replaying the horrible scene she had witnessed the evening before, her best friend and Michael kissing. Although she really didn't have any romantic interest in Alain, she didn't want to be around Emma. Not now, it was too awkward. And Alain had been kind to her; he seemed to care and had even offered to fix things. She wondered what he'd meant by that.
"Sure, why not?" She agreed as she sat up.
“Wonderful!” He proclaimed with elation. “I’ll come by your room in about 30 minutes, alright?”
“Okay. See you then, Alain.” Krystina climbed out of bed and walked into the bathroom to take a shower and get ready for the day.
The phone rang again, this time waking Emma. She had actually slept better that night than she had in weeks, and for the first time she hadn't dreamt of Jared. This time her dreams involved a 14 time Olympic Gold Medalist and they were oh so nice. She rolled over and lifted the phone to her ear. "Hello?"
"Emma? Hi, it's Michael.” He said, happy to talk to her again. “How are you this morning?"
"Hi Michael, I'm good. How are you?" She couldn't help but blush at the sound of his voice. He was so sweet.
"I’m great, thanks for asking. Hey, I was wondering if you would like to have breakfast with me?" He offered.
Emma hesitated. She didn't want to hurt Krystina but couldn't imagine turning him down. He sounded so sexy on the phone and she really wanted to see him again. She’d had more fun last night than she had since she’d been with Jared and for awhile, she’d even forgotten about her ex.
“Emma? Are you there?” Not hearing a response, he wondered if everything was okay.
Emma closed her eyes and thought for a moment. By saying yes, she risked upsetting her best friend again. But saying no to Michael Phelps? Was that even an option?
"Breakfast sounds good.” She answered quickly, before she could doubt her decision. “Just please give me about 20 minutes to get ready."
“Okay, Emma. I’ll come by your room then.” He stated with excitement.
"Bye Michael.” Emma hung up the phone and bit her lower lip. How was she going to tell Krystina and how would she react? Just then Krystina came out of the bathroom; her questions would be answered soon.
"Um, Krystina? We need to talk." Emma voiced firmly but nervously.
"Can't now, I've got a date." Krystina replied, racing around the room frantically looking for her sandals.
"A date? With who?" Emma wondered who on earth this could be. They’d barely been in France for 24 hours and hardly knew anyone.
"With Alain." Krystina responded. "The guy who came back here with me last night."
"Him?" Emma’s curiosity was definitely perked now. She knew Krystina's type and he didn't fit. "But why?"
"Maybe because I like him!" Krystina spat back.
"You do?" Emma replied with complete shock. "But yesterday you said you were in love with Michael!"
"Yeah well, you ruined that, thanks." Krystina glared, locating her sandals and slipping them on.
Emma crossed her arms and sighed. She thought Krystina had understood what had happened the night before, but apparently she was wrong. She hated being at odds with her best friend, especially over a guy. That was something they always said they'd never let happen. But she couldn’t help how she felt and she wanted to spend time with Michael. They had to anyway because of the book.
“Breakfast, with Michael?” Krystina groaned. “To work on the book or something else?”
“Actually, I don’t know.” Emma confessed. “But if it bothers you, I won’t go. But since you have a date, I just assumed that-“
“Do what you want.” Krystina interrupted. “You sure as hell did last night."
“I thought you understood!” Emma conveyed with frustration. She didn’t like this tension between them and wanted it to end. “Forgive me for being confused, but I am. You are obviously upset with me because of Michael but yet you have a date with Alain. And if you really like Alain, I think that's great. But you can’t have both guys. You need to make a decision.”
“That was made for me.” Krystina declared.
“I didn’t plan for that to happen, I swear.” Emma expressed with deep sincerity. “You know how hard things have been for me since Jared and I broke up. I just want you to be happy. But I want to be happy too. You understand that, right?” Emma prayed that she could.
“Of course I want you to be happy!” Krystina answered tearfully. “I just didn’t think it would be with the guy I wanted, that’s all.”
Emma looked down at her watch. It was getting late and Michael would be there soon. “I’m sorry but I need to get ready. I hope we can spend some time together later to work this out. And I hope you have a fabulous time with Alain.” She smiled.
“If you’re not too busy with Michael.” Krystina growled under her breath as Emma walked into the bathroom.
Meanwhile, outside the room…
Alain and Michael both arrived to pick up the girls at the same time.
"Hi Michael.” Alain gritted his teeth, trying to hide his utter disgust for the guy. Did he have to be everywhere he was? It was bad enough that he was on every television show and magazine imaginable!
“Hi Alain.” Michael nodded in acknowledgement as he knocked on the door. “Are you here to see Krystina?”
"Yes, I am!" Alain declared with pride.
“That’s cool.” Michael answered. “I’m taking Emma out for breakfast.”
“He’s going out with Emma!” Alain thought to himself. “This is coming along marvelously.”
“Hi Michael!” Both girls cooed in unison as they opened the door, each set of eyes fixated on him. He looked so perfect.
Alain felt the anger build up inside him. Um hello?? He was standing there too! “Krystina! We’re going to have so much fun this morning.” He took her hand and squeezed it, breaking her love struck gaze. "I'm taking you to my favorite restaurant." He lead her away and she looked back to capture one last glance at the man she wished she was leaving with.
Michael smiled at Emma and she felt herself blush again. She wasn’t usually this way around guys but he did something to her like no other. She had major butterflies in her stomach.
“Are you ready to go?” He asked and extended his hand.
“Uh huh.” She said a bit bashfully as she took it.
As they walked off, Emma’s cell phone rang from inside her purse. “Hold on a minute.” She stopped and pulled out her phone. Not recognizing the number, she ignored the call and slid the phone back inside its pocket. “Okay, I’m ready now.”
“I’m really glad you decided to see me this morning.” Michael admitted honestly. “I had such a wonderful time with you last night.”
“Me too.” Emma wanted to say more but all she could do was stare at him. Could he get any more gorgeous? Nope, she didn’t think so.
He stopped walking and stood in front of her, taking her other hand in his. He held onto them for a moment before letting go and cupping her chin in his hands. He leaned down and kissed her again, sending jolts of electricity through her body.
Meanwhile, on Emma’s voice mail…
"Emma, its Jared. Listen, I've been doing a lot of soul searching and have come to a decision. I can't live without you."
