Come to think of it, it's ironic how well some books I illustrated since the time we were allowed to choose books describe my life at the time (and in general).
Leaf by Niggle is a story of an artist who struggles for his art and is constantly running out of time.
The Black Cloud is about science, supernatural and the circumstances bigger than you are.
And now Farmer Giles of Ham is about a man who never wanted to be a hero being sent to face his fears...
I can talk about these three books for ages, about the meanings I see in them and the process of illustrating (even if it's a really sad story like it turned out with The Black Cloud). I get really attached to books I illustrate if those are the books I actually wanted to work on in the first place. I can only hope I will get opportunities like that in my future professional life.
