Joy Wellboy "Lay Down Your Blade"
In their home country of Belgium and neighbouring France they are cult figures. Here in Germany the Brussels duo made waves for the first time with its wonderful Movement Song and showed on the BPC compilation Where The Wind Blows how a dance floor track and a pop ballad can be combined to outstanding effect.
Lay Down Your Blade achieves this feat a second time. The title track is a hauntingly simple ballad of disarming, almost naïve beauty -- pure emotion. This is how pop music should sound! The second track What Baby could also be described as pop in the very best sense -- with catchy synth arrangements and Joy Adegoke's somewhat wistful, soul-inspired vocals, however, it has a much edgier feel than the opener.
How do you approach such a work as a remix artist? Joy Wellboy's Brussels colleague DC Salas (releases on labels including Biologic Records, Der Turnbeutel) and the Freude am Tanzen talent Douglas Greed from Jena impress by carefully and deliberately remaining true to the original works. Rather than delivering pure dance floor hits, Diego and Douglas skilfully play with arcs of tension, surprising changes and the original atmosphere of the two tracks. They also take their time in bringing just enough tempo into these ballad-like pieces to get heads, hearts and feet moving constantly to their tech-house beats. The perfect appetiser for Joy Wellboy's debut album, due for release in September 2013.
