Clark sighed looking to his left at his stunningly blonde cousin. Making their way through the crowd she smiled that dazzling smile as she waved to her “constituents.” Not even in Smallville two weeks and his Kryptonian cousin had been named Miss Sweet Corn, after having entered the competition spontaneously.
“Lighten up, Clark … this is fun,” she teased as they continued deeper into the festival. Chloe chuckled from his right and he turned his head to look at her sharply.
“Oh come on Clark! You have to admit that Kara has made this an enjoyable event,” she pointed out and Kara smiled.
“Thanks, Chlo,” she replied before turning to grace another passerby with her killer smile and a wave.
“I’m thrilled that you won … I really am, but I don’t like the attention you’re getting from one person in particular,” he said in a low voice, attempting to keep his gaze from lifting toward Lex Luthor, who stood across the lot near a few other festival contributors.
Stopping in her tracks, Kara turned to him, taking his hands softly.
“Clark, I know that Lex Luthor is not a good person and even further that you don’t want me anywhere near him. You and Chloe both have explained to me that I have to be careful not to reveal my powers to him and I promise you that I won’t,” she told him and he smiled. His grin suddenly faded as a light yet painful pressure was applied to his hands.
“But if you don’t start having fun … I’m going to kick your ass,” Kara warned, gracing him with a sweet smile before letting go, turning once more to look around the crowd. Chloe chuckled, her hand rising to pat Clark comfortingly on the shoulder.
“Have I mentioned how much I love her?” she asked before making her way past him, following Kara toward the booths set up in the corner with games and prizes. Clark watched them go and quickly smiled.
Having Kara in his life had certainly made things interesting, but Lex Luthor was once again a complication. She had saved him, twice actually, and now she worked at the Talon. As much as he wanted to believe that she could keep their secret to herself, he knew that Lex Luthor’s charm with women had a way of making even the strongest cave. He only wished that she could meet someone that would understand her abilities and be able to share that with her. His cousin deserved to be able to share her secret … just not with Lex Luthor.
Watching Kara attempt to play the ring toss with Chloe and Jimmy, who had made his way over from the bumper cars; Clark frowned wishing that he had the answer. Suddenly a thought popped into his head and he smiled. Captivating his cousin with someone other than Lex Luthor wasn’t going to be easy … but he knew just the man to help him.
“Having a zen moment there, Robin Hood?” Opening his eyes, Oliver Queen looked up with a frown at Bart Allen, who stood a few feet away. Poised in a perfect handstand, the blonde had been attempting to do yoga, but his “impulsive” teammate always seemed to have the worst timing. Curving his body, Oliver tipped down to return to an upright position.
Wiping the sweat from his brow with a towel, he turned toward his young friend with a roll of his eyes.
“I have mentioned that your timing sucks, right?” Ollie asked and Bart chuckled.
“Yeah, but I think you’ll like me for this one … we’re taking off,” Bart told him and Oliver’s face turned to shock.
“Already?” he asked.
“Come on amigo, you know we’re always a phone call away, but eventually we have to get back to everyday life,” Bart told him and Oliver nodded, holding out his hand with a smile. Bart returned the gesture, taking the older man’s hand with a smile.
“Take care of yourself, Green Arrow.” Oliver smiled, unable to suppress a chuckle at the younger man’s attempt at being serious.
“You too, Impulse, you too,” he replied and watched as in the blink of an eye Bart was gone. Frowning, Oliver looked around the empty house, his nerves on edge at the sound of the quietness that now lingered.
For the past few months, he had gotten used to his family home being filled with his team. This had been their place of refuge and now it just seemed like it had once been before … a tomb. The sound of his phone ringing quickly snapped him out of his melancholy thoughts as he found it on his desk.
Not bothering to look at the caller id, Oliver clicked the phone on, raising it to his ear.
“Queen speaking,” he answered.
“So formal … didn’t check the caller id, did you?” came Clark’s voice and Oliver smiled.
“No I did, I just figured it was only proper to greet a hero formally,” Ollie teased, listening as the brunette chuckled.
“How are you?” Clark asked and Oliver sighed, moving to take a seat on the sofa.
“The team just left,” the blonde admitted.
“Really?”
“Yeah … I mean if there is work to be done, I know how to get ahold of them, but its strange not having them around,”
“Maybe you need a new change of pace,” Clark suggested.
“You sound like you’ve got something in mind there, Boy Scout. Something going on in Smallville?” Oliver asked.
“No … its just, a lot has changed. I figured if you’ve got the time to come out, you can get caught up to speed on all the craziness,” Clark replied. Oliver paused considering his offer carefully. It wasn’t like he had anything to lose by going back to Metropolis for awhile. His company was doing well and he knew that he could run it just as easily from that city as he could from Star City. Plus the added bonus of keeping his eye on Lex Luthor was always a key factor.
“Actually, that sounds like a good idea, Clark,” Oliver said after much deliberation.
“Yeah?” Clark asked.
“Absolutely … give me a day to get things sorted. I’ll stop by the farm once I’m back,” the blonde replied.
“Great … I’ll see you then,” Clark told him. Saying their goodbyes, Oliver hung up and looked down at the phone for a moment longer. Metropolis … He knew Lois was likely to still be there and it would be difficult to see her, but Oliver knew he had to go and see Clark. Something told him that this was going to be a very interesting trip.
“I’ll be back soon, okay?” Rolling her eyes, Kara turned toward her cousin, a pleasant smile gracing her features.
“Of course … I’ll see you in a bit,” she said. Clark looked at her doubtfully for a moment before speeding off in a blur toward town.
Turning back to her task, the blonde frowned slightly. It was her first time baking cookies, and while her “aunt” Martha and Clark had both assured her that it was simple, she had never worked with these kinds of measurements before. Shrugging she sped through the task, satisfied with the batter that sat in the bowl.
Placing a tray of cookies into the oven to bake, Kara set the timer before turning back toward the book that Chloe had given her. It was a history of the greatest events in Earth’s history. She hadn’t wanted to read it, but Clark assured her it would give her insight into her new home.
Taking a sip of lemonade, she began to scan the pages at a rapid pace, her fingers rising each second to turn the page. So engrossed in the book, Kara didn’t even hear the sound of an approaching car.
Pursing her lips, Kara looked quizzically at the section on the fall of the Berlin Wall before hearing the crunch of gravel in the yard. Looking up she quickly frowned at the sight of a slick car in the driveway. Lex Luthor couldn’t be that stupid, she thought. Taking the tray of cookies out of the oven, she wiped her hands before heading outside.
Reaching the fence, she was about to call out to Lex, but as the door opened and the occupant stepped out, Kara quickly realized that it was most definitely not Lex Luthor. A blonde god was more along her lines of thinking as he looked around, his gaze finding her.
Stepping out of the car, Oliver smiled looking around the Kent Farm. Some things never change, he thought to himself as he turned toward the house, his gaze landing on a surprised and equally stunning young woman. His brows knitted together in curiosity as he closed the door to his car, making his way over.
“Hi,” Ollie said and Kara swallowed hard. Sure Lex was handsome, but the man before her was more than handsome … he was gorgeous.
“Hi,” Kara replied softly.
“I don’t think I know you,” he said holding his hand out to her. “I’m Oliver,” he introduced. Kara smiled taking his hand, delighting in the softness of his skin yet firmness of his grip.
“I’m Kara,” she told him and he nodded, a smile gracing his face.
“Are you a friend of Clark’s?” he asked, inwardly hoping that this was not a new girlfriend of Clark’s, cause he’d feel awfully bad about the thoughts racing through his head at the moment.
“No I’m his cousin,” she replied, cringing inwardly, but hoping that her visitor hadn’t seen it as she flashed him a bright smile. Oliver smiled back, his mind flipping through the facts he knew about Clark, and like a neon sign, the fact that he didn’t have any family beyond his adopted parents and their parents, shined through in full force.
“I thought Clark was supposed to be the last of the Kryptonian race?” he asked, watching as Kara’s gaze went from pleasant to utter shock.
“How? … How did you know that?” she asked and he chuckled. Worried at what his actual intentions were Kara reached out, quickly circling his neck with her hand in a chokehold.
“Whoa wait a minute … I’m not an enemy … I’m a friend of Clark’s, I know about his abilities and he knows about mine … we’re both crime fighters,” Oliver stammered and slowly felt the tightness ease in her grip until her hand was gone completely. Rubbing his neck tenderly he looked over at her, noticing how her expression had gone from determined to embarrassed quickly.
“Hey don’t sweat it … that happens to me all the time,” he joked, causing Kara to giggle.
“Um Clark had to … run … into town, but if you want to come inside and wait?” she suggested and Oliver nodded.
“That sounds great,” he replied and she nodded, turning to make her way back toward the house. Entering the farmhouse, Oliver’s senses were assaulted with the pleasant smell of chocolate chip cookies. His gaze was drawn to the oven only to find a half cooked sheet of cookies.
“Cooking mishap?” he asked.
“No … I just didn’t want to burn my first-ever batch … I took them out because I thought you were Lex,” she told him, as she inserted a second tray with fresh batter into the oven. Grabbing ahold of the other tray, she focused her vision and Oliver watched as heat rays tunneled down to the tray, the cookies instantly rising and baking to a golden brown.
“Didn’t want to do that with all the batter?” Oliver asked and she turned to him with a smile, setting the tray down on the island.
“That would take the fun out of the experience … I haven’t been here that long, I’m still trying to savor the experience,” she told him.
“Where were you?” Oliver asked, watching as she went to the fridge, pulling out the pitcher of milk before pouring two glasses full. Handing him one of the glasses she frowned.
“I was kind of stuck,” she admitted and he looked at her in confusion.
“Stuck?”
“Kind of like a suspended animation … when Krypton was falling and my aunt and uncle sent Kal-El … I mean Clark … to Earth, my uncle asked me to go as well. He knew it was a risk and that there was a chance I might not make it, but we all knew I wouldn’t make it if I stayed on Krypton anyways,” she explained.
“So it’s taken you this long to get here?” Oliver asked.
“Sort of. When the meteor shower hit Earth, there was a slight hiccup and I ended up being sucked up in a vortex, I think. All I know is that one day I was leaving Krypton, the next I was on Earth searching for my cousin. I never would have imagined that he’d be older than me when I found him,” Kara admitted taking a cookie. Dipping it in the milk, she raised the treat to her lips and took a bite, savoring the delicious taste.
Smiling Oliver followed suit in her actions. Taking a tentative bite of his cookie, he grinned seeing Kara’s hopeful expression.
“Excellent first batch,” he replied and she smiled brightly. Gazes still locked on one another, neither noticed as Clark appeared in the doorway. The brunette’s gaze shifted from his cousin to his friend and he couldn’t help but inwardly smile. Deciding to reveal his self, Clark cleared his throat and the pair looked in his direction.
“Clark,” Oliver said, a smile gracing his features as he stood to shake the younger man’s hand.
“How are you, Ollie?” Clark replied causing the blonde to shrug.
“Can’t complain … not that anyone would listen anyway,” he joked and Clark chuckled.
“I see you’ve met Kara,” the brunette said moving to stand next to her. Noticing the cookies he lifted one cautiously to his mouth.
“This isn’t Lois cooking, Clark. They’re good, trust me,” Oliver assured him. Smiling, Clark nodded taking a bite.
“Very good,” he told Kara, who smiled once more.
“So you said things have changed … I assume you’re not just talking about Kara here,” Oliver said to Clark taking another cookie from the tray. Taking a seat on the stool next to his friend, Clark sighed.
“Well it all started at Reeves Dam,” he began, telling Oliver about Lana’s death, Lex’s arrest, the showdown with his other self, right up to Kara’s arrival and her victory at the Miss Sweet Corn Festival.
“Wow … sounds like a lot has gone on,” Oliver replied. Clark looked at his blonde friend in suspicion. It was as if he was holding something back.
“What aren’t you telling me?” Clark asked and Oliver smiled shaking his head.
“You’re too perceptive for your own good, Kent … you know that?” he asked.
“So I’ve been told … so what is it?” Clark asked. Oliver hesitated before nodding. Reaching into his back pocket, he pulled out his wallet, searching through the contents to find a slip of paper. Slowly he slid it across the counter to the brunette.
“What’s this?” Clark asked, looking at the paper which showed an address in Italy.
“That is Isabella Tucia’s address,” Oliver told him, watching as Clark’s brows knitted together in confusion.
“I don’t know any Isabella Tucia,” Clark replied and Oliver smiled. Reaching into his coat pocket, he pulled out a pen and took the slip of paper back. Writing something quickly on it, he handed it back to the younger man waiting for his reaction. Clark’s eyes went wide at Oliver’s handwritten note, looking at the blonde in shock.
“It’s not possible,” he replied.
“It is possible, Clark. Sometimes people only see what others want them to see,” he began.
“I don’t understand,” Clark replied.
“What are either of you talking about?” Kara asked in confusion.
“When Lionel saw Lana get into her car … it was less than a second before the car exploded,” Clark told Oliver adamantly.
“Actually it was more than a second … just long enough for her to make eye contact, open and shut the door,” Oliver explained. “A truck passed between them … long enough for Cyborg to reach out and grab her,” the blonde revealed. Clark looked at him in complete shock.
“Your team rescued her?” he asked.
“She contacted me about a month before … Lana told me that she knew about your abilities and she was afraid that if she stayed with Lex much longer that he would figure it out and also figure out that she was still in love with you … She wanted to protect you,” Oliver said.
“So you came here without any word? You’ve gone all this time without telling me that she’s okay? Were you ever going to tell me?” Clark asked, his voice rising in anger. Oliver sighed, shaking his head as he stood, pacing for a moment before turning back to the brunette.
“Clark … she needed to get to safety first. I wanted to make sure that she was adjusted to her new life. Hell I don’t even know if she’s ready, but I felt you needed to know,” he explained softly. Clark regarded him for a moment before nodding.
“Thank you for telling me. I’ll make sure that nobody finds out about this,” Clark said sliding the address into his pocket.
“Well now that my cookies are done … I need to get to work,” Kara said suddenly and the two men looked to see that the blonde indeed had finished the cookies, which now sat on various baking racks. Oliver looked at her with a curious grin and she shrugged sheepishly.
“Okay so I cheated a bit,” she admitted and he chuckled causing Clark to smile.
“Can I give you a ride?” Oliver offered and Kara looked at him in surprise.
“I realize you can probably get there quicker if you’d rather …”
“No, I’d like that … thank you,” she told him and both smiled.
“Alright … well after you,” Oliver said motioning to the door.
“I’ll see you later,” Kara said to her cousin, who nodded, watching as she made her way out onto the porch.
“I’m heading back to the penthouse afterwards. Don’t be afraid to stop by,” Oliver told the brunette, who smiled and nodded.
“I guess I should probably ask where you work,” Oliver said with a chuckle.
“I work at the Talon,” Kara replied as they made their way deeper into town.
“You work at the one place in town that Lex Luthor owns?” the blonde asked curiously causing Kara to laugh.
“I didn’t realize he owned it when I applied. I guess I just thought it would be a good idea to get a job. You know, get involved and blend in,” she replied.
“I think you were born to stand out, beautiful,” Oliver remarked without thinking. Kara looked over at him in surprise, a smile gracing her features at his comment.
All too soon, he had pulled up to the front of the Talon and Kara frowned looking over at the building. If there was ever a moment when she wished she didn’t have to be somewhere this was it.
“Do you want to come in for a minute?” she asked causing Oliver to smile.
“Somehow I don’t think me hanging out in there will improve your workplace status … Lex and I aren’t exactly the best of friends,” Oliver told her. Shrugging, Kara smiled.
“Just cause he owns the place doesn’t mean he’s here everyday,” she replied.
“What time do you get out?” Oliver asked.
“Are you asking me out on a date?” Kara replied teasingly causing Ollie to smile.
“Maybe I am … Are you saying yes?” he asked. Opening the car door, Kara got out. Turning toward the building she paused, looking back at him with a blinding smile.
“Eight o’clock,” she told him before turning back, making her way into the building.
Letting out a chuckle, Oliver grinned before putting the car into gear, heading toward Metropolis.
