I use this Live Journal account primarily to read, proof read or review fan fiction. You will probably not find many personal postings from me here.
While technical software/systems writing is my profession, I don't personally write any fiction at all. I can draw, paint, take beautiful photographs or produce masterful technical documentation - but creative writing is a skill I do not possess.
However, I have spent the better part of the last 15+ years reading fan fiction...and as a speed-reader; I have now read several thousand stories. My fandom interests are as follows, listed chronologically:
- Star Trek: The Next Generation: In the early 90s, I made a brief foray into fan fiction, and the first I read was set in the TNG universe. TNG remains my favourite television series, but I have no interest in reading any fic about it.
- Star Trek: Voyager: ~1996 - I hadn't read fan fiction for a few years, but ended up starting again with Voyager. INACTIVE
Ship: Janeway/Chakotay. - Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: ~1999 - Alongside VOY, I started reading DS9 fiction with a bias toward Kira-centric stories. INACTIVE
Ship: Kira/Dukat, Kira/Damar. - The Outsiders: 2000 - I first looked at this fandom when there were only a couple of hundred stories on ff.net. At the time, the stories struck me as unremarkable, and it was years before I even bothered to read another.
- Lord of the Rings: 2001 - The first and so far only fandom where I found slash readable. INACTIVE
Ship: Aragorn/Arwen, Aragorn/Legolas, Legolas/Haldir. - Buffy the Vampire Slayer: 2002 - This is my primary fandom, and it probably always will be. The Buffyverse is home to some truly outstanding authors. Also, there is so much potential in this fandom - every genre has a place. I discovered BtVS late, but made up for lost time, and have spent years utterly immersed in Spuffy. I also enjoy reading the rare treat that is Tara/Spike fiction. ACTIVE
Ship: Buffy/Spike, Tara/Spike. - Gone With the Wind: 2004 - Who are they kidding? Scarlet and Rhett were made for each other, damn it. I had a renewed interest in this fandom after finally reading the mediocre sequel (I had put it off for years). After I had read 'Scarlett', I thought, "I've read fan fic better written than this," and so I googled. PS: I own'Rhett Butler's People', but still haven't worked up the courage to read it. INACTIVE
- The Outsiders: 2007 - I started reading in this fandom again. There are now some beautiful stories amongst the drek on ff.net. I must admit that I'm partial to Dallas-centric stories, but will happily read any character study. INACTIVE
- Law & Order: Special Victims Unit: 2009 - After a couple of attempts over the years to get into the Law & Order franchise (I really tried, but Criminal Intent seldom worked for me, fic-wise), I'm now totally on-board with the SVU love and foresee that I won't emerge from this fandom for some time to come. SEMI-ACTIVE
Ship: Elliot/Olivia. - Star Trek XI: 2009 - 2009 has been a very good year! But, it pains me to see so many new 'writers' churning out stories (and truly disturbing kink PWPs) that are based on Pine and Quinto's looks alone. Damn tween/teen newbies... Star Trek *does* have 43 years worth of history, ya know.INACTIVE
Ship: Spock/Uhura. - House M.D.: 2009 - Found House fic, but couldn't stay interested. I liked House and Cameron in angsty situations. INACTIVE
- NCIS: 2009 - I like NCIS genfic because for me it's all about the team dynamic. I must say that Trent Kort is one of the most interesting characters to come into any of my fandoms for years. If you have Kort-fic, please point me to it. INACTIVE
Ship: DiNozzo/David. - A Song of Ice and Fire: 2011 - I saw HBOs "Game of Thrones", and within five minutes I was sold. I haven't see more than an hour or two of the television series - the written series is far more engrossing. Tyrion is awesome. ACTIVE
Ship: Sansa/Sandor, Jaime/Brienne.
