The Britishness of me, and the meaning of the word 'gusset'spuriousidJune 12 2007, 03:49:07 UTC
Curses, rumbled again! Yep, I'm British 9although that's not neccessarrily to blame for my pretentious writing style - many Brits are concise and to the point and everything, and many foreigners are almost as annoyingly long-winded as me... ;) 'Gusset From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search
In engineering, a gusset is a structure designed to reinforce a joint where two or more disconnected parts meet, such as two steel beams. It is a plate that is placed on the exterior of the separate parts, such that an equal amount of area on the plate covers each part. It is then fastened using glue or rivets, etc.
If building a structure out of wood, a much stronger structure is yielded by connecting the joints with gussets as opposed to gluing the ends of the beams of wood together. Metal gusset plates are used with lightweight trusses. They may vary in size, but 18-gauge steel plates with 3/8" prongs is the standard. For firefighters, lightweight truss systems are particularly dangerous. Metal gusset plate connectors fail quickly when exposed to heat and fire. When the bottom chord or webbing fails due to fire damage or the gusset plate pulls out of the wood from the heat, the truss will fail. Since lightweight construction depends on the sum of all members for structural integrity, the potential for total building collapse is high.
Gusset is also used in manufacturing of tights (or pantyhose). It reinforces the top part of tights and also has hygienic function.
Gusset is also an alternate spelling of gousset, a component of late Medieval armor.
A gusset is a device used to add strength to a structure.'
I always think of the top part of pantyhose when I use the word, so it's nice to know there are other meanings. Now I have to learn them all and find more xcuses to use the word 'gusset' in my daily conversations...

Wow thats awesome!! i love british people!i love the way you guys talk and sound its just amazing, im going to marry someone british and im gonna live their too haha well either there or texas...im gonna use the word gusset tomorrow and see how many heads i turn!! lol
In all honesty I'm torn. I smoke a lot of it, but I don't necessarily regard that as a good thing. Sometimes it's useful to take the edge off the world, but sometimes it's just another place to hide from the world, which is something i do far too much of. Ambivalent really, I suupose - how about you?
Id probably say that its pretty ridiculous that im only 16 and im already burnt out...smoked way too much way too often. I wont say that I hate because then i would be lying...in all honesty i love the way it makes me feel and i just notice the beautiful things of the world and puts me in a place like no other...i do know that its a way to escape from the world and thats not always good, but other then munchies...smoking green hasnt gotten me in any trouble thus far nor has it gotten me sick...only given me a beautiful sense of whats around me..so i guess theres 2 takes you can have on it.
Yeah, that's definitely the up side of it, and it's an entirely valid point. i think it's one of those things like alcohol that is fine in moderation, but becomes a problem if over-used. And being an over- (or even uber-) user myself, I have a skewed perspective on it because I have a skewed perspective on the drug. Alcoholics find it difficult to talk impartially about booze, so it's probably a thing...
yeah, my fathers an alcoholic so ive kinda been scared of booze because i seen all of the horrible things its done to him and i dont want that for me...so is that why i smoke pot? i dont know...but tell me this, where you live is marijuana illigal or legal?
It's illegal, although ranked as a class 'C' drugs (whilst heroin and cocaine are class 'A's). there's an assumption that the Police are only going to get excited if you're selling it - possessing a small amount for personal use would probably get you a formal caution, which stays on your record, but they'd be unlikely to press charges, take you to court, or whatever. That's the assumpion, at least, although they could do all these things since possession is still a crime.
