“Good friends, good books, and a sleepy conscience: this is the ideal life.”

“A library is infinity under a roof.”

I saw this quote on my goodreads app today, and just thought- "exactly!"
So simple and so true. I really feel like every time I dive into a book I am going into a different world, a different life, and the possibilities are endless. And because of this, I am slightly addicted to my library. I never would have thought I could find such joy in not owning books. I've always loved buying used books and building up my library but as I get older I seem to want less material, and more substance. So now I don't want to own books, and every time I finish one off my own library I feel a small sense of relief at shipping it off to Goodwill for someone else to enjoy. I am downsizing bit by bit and I like it.
I get so much more joy from the public library than I do my own. I walk in and that smell of warmth and stale paper envelops me as I rush to the "New Fiction" section like a kid in the candy store. Or to the "holds" section where I pick up whatever book I had ordered and been waiting for for weeks. It's just pure joy.

So after The Red Tent (which now ranks up there with my all time favorite books) I read The Kitchen Daughter, which was also quite good, but not stunning. I am also about halfway through All Over Creation which is a brilliant book and reminds me a lot of Barbara Kingsolver's Prodigal Summer. Both of them are fictional stories revolving around farming, nature, plants, and the hazardous side effects of chemical pesticides.. So basically, right up my alley!

In other news, this has been a total lazy and unproductive Sunday. I had planned on doing so much today, but I just wasn't feeling it. So I have been reading all day, and when not reading, watching The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, because I am about 10 episodes behind. I loooovvvve me some Colbert!
I would have felt worse about being such a huge sloth today were it not for my ultra productive Saturday, wherein I cleaned out the chicken coop, went to the gym, grocery store, took the dog to the park to play frisbee, went on a short run, got all 4 of my tires replaced with new ones (shout out to Discount Tires!), finished my book, and made a delicious chicken, barley, potato, cauliflower soup, slightly seasoned with garlic, savory, sage, and turmeric. In fact this past week I was finally responsible enough to take my car in for an oil change, which was about 2 years over due (eeek!) and while I was at it I replaced the wipers, a rear light, and got a new air filter. So now all that is left to do is a spark plug change and transmission flush, which I'll do after next pay check. I felt so responsible finally taking care of the shit I've successfully avoided for too long.
Now if I can only get to cleaning out the garage and getting my office organized!

So lately the weather has been kind of nice for being January. It still rains but at least it's usually in the upper 40's and mid 50s in the day. The constant 30s seem to be behind us which I am all too thrilled about. The Daffodils I planted in November out front are just peeking their little green stems up. They are about an inch or so high, and I am so excited to see them! Having a winter makes me wholeheartedly treasure spring, and in Oregon, the first sign of spring are Daffodils and asparagus shoots. It's like being reunited with a long lost friend you missed more than words could adequately say.
So I am aching to be done with this month and on into February, and aching to see blooms come to life in the ground and on trees once again.

Well I think I am going to get back to doing nothing. So TTFN! Happy slothy Sunday :)
