it's that time again

I never use my dreamwidth, anymore, but it seems weird to post a dear yuletide letter to tumblr, so here we are:

Dear Yuletide Writer,

Thank you, thank you, thank you for writing for me! Thank you for offering one of my obscure fandoms! Thank you for signing up for yuletide! Any story you want to write in any of these fandoms will make me happy -- and if there's something you've been dying to write, please take this opportunity to write it! I will love the story, as long as you love writing the story.

As you know, all of my details are optional. I try to be fairly detailed in prompts because I'm the sort of writer who likes detailed prompts, but if you find that daunting or distracting, please feel free to go your own way. (Also, I have definitely been a little more vague and open-ended this year than usual, so take that however you like.)

I'm very relationship-focused in general, but that doesn't necessarily require sex or romance -- although I have mostly asked for romantic pairings this year, I am also happy to read genfic. In all of these fandoms, and with all of these characters, I'm interested in how their relationships develop and change, and in what these characters mean to each other. I like complexity, and layers; interesting relationship dynamics (and found families) are my one bulletproof forever love. I care a lot about canon, but that doesn't mean you have to treat the canon with reverence. I like plot, and I like sex and romance much more if they come with plot. I like dialogue, and people who are too smart or witty or dangerous for their own good, and moral ambiguity. I look for spot-on character voices, and seemingly-insignificant details, and difficult and complicated relationships that ring true. I like humor, and realism, and ambiguity, and the ridiculous. I like queerness. I like cake. I like murders, and people who fight crime. I like the apocalyptic. I like laughter in the face of despair. I like things that are bittersweet, and happy endings, and sad endings, and the inevitable.

There are not a lot of things I really dislike, but in general I would prefer that you avoided rape and extreme torture. I don't respond well to characters becoming objects of ridicule for no reason, or to pointless meanness -- call it an embarrassment squick. I am pretty quickly turned off by major stylistic and grammatical errors, and unexplained and/or irregular POV switches.

I don't really use my DW anymore, and it's also locked, as is my twitter; but my AO3 profile and my tumblr are public, as are some of my recs and meta posts, and yuletide posts from previous years. And of course you should feel free to stalk me on the internet.

Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. Phryne Fisher, Jack Robinson.

I'm at the point with Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries where I really just want them to PUT THEIR FACES TOGETHER, and sometimes I yell this at the TV when rewatching episodes. So I would really like Phryne/Jack, in basically any capacity. That said, I also love all the other things about the show, and would adore a casefic, especially a long casefic (although obviously a long story is not required), in which the other characters also feature. Other things that could be great: any ridiculous fic trope, like fake dating, or criminals made them do it, or undercover as married, etc.

Points - Melissa Scott & Lisa A. Barnett. Philip Eslingen, Nicolas Rathe.

I love these books, and I love that we keep getting more in the universe (Fair's Point coming out this year was an unexpected but awesome surprise), but I am forever sad about the fact that we've never gotten the story of Nico and Philip getting together in the first place. Point of Knives is great for filling in some of the blank between Point of Hopes and Point of Dreams, but when did they sleep together for the first time? What happened? I want that story, and I would read a hundred different versions of that story, so if you're up for it, you should write yours! If that's not your thing, then I'd love something set after Fair's Point: how do they navigate working together in a more official capacity? Casefic is great, porn is great, worldbuilding is great; this is a series where I would be happy just to have more to read.

Great British Bake Off RPF. Sue Perkins, Mel Giedroyc.

Cake! Puns! Love! Romance! There are a few GBBO stories on the AO3, but none of them are Mel/Sue, and I think this is a tragedy. They are comedy partners and best friends for life, and an absolute delight, and I would love to read a story about them falling in love. The possibility for dirty jokes about cake is really endless.

Seriously, I would read anything. Especially if it involves cake and makeouts.

Third Crusade RPF. Richard I of England, Ṣalāḥ ad-Dīn Yūsuf ibn Ayyūb (Saladin).

Richard and Saladin never actually met in person, and the crusades were very horrible. However, as star-crossed historical OTPs go, this is such a great one, and (as with the GBBO request) I think it's a shame that there seems to be no fic about them. What if they had met in person? What if they did, only that meeting never made it into the historical record (for reasons)? What other kinds of letters might they have been exchanging? I have no objections to tragedy, here, or to realism, but please also feel free to fuck around with history to your heart's content. Star-crossed historical OTP!

(I had a hell of a time trying to nominate this, because Richard I was synced to The Lion in Winter, and Saladin was synced to Kingdom of Heaven, and it took me forever to figure out how to nominate them elsewhere. Which is to say that you should feel free, should you write this prompt, to incorporate any versions of them -- I certainly have a lot of feelings about the Richard I of The Lion in Winter -- and as much historical fiction as you like. As always, write what you want to write!)

Most of all, and most importantly: HAVE FUN!
