Yuletide 2012: Being What We Can (Fame, Doris/Ralph/Montgomery)

Jan 01, 2013 12:48

This year, I continued my tradition of writing only one story, and having that story take over my life. This story comes from a slightly different part of my soul than last year's Jacobean Superhero Extravaganza, but it's still really obviously a story that I wrote -- not to mention a love letter to my theatre-obsessed adolescence, New York City, and the 1980s.

Being What We Can for
Dani
Fame (1980) • Montgomery MacNeil/Ralph Garci, Ralph Garci/Doris Finsecker, Montgomery MacNeil & Doris Finsecker • Explicit • 12,000 words
Ten years, twelve beats, and something like a happy ending.

Warnings for AIDS, canonical homophobia, minor character death, discussion of suicide, bad childhoods, depression, drug use, and people attempting polyamory without any good examples. Enticements for New York City, theatre, reunions, the 1980s, unconventional relationships, and found family. No legwarmers were harmed in the making of this story.

pedantic_wretch for love, support, beta-reading, story-fixing, and listening to me go on at great length about my overwhelming Fame feelings.

This story is, in being something of a love letter to my adolescence, immensely self-indulgent; I also think Fame has a fandom of, like, ten people. Still, I am pretty proud of this one -- I loved writing it, and I love the result -- and I have it on good authority that it is readable even without canon knowledge. The funny thing about this story, for me at least, is that it's one of those weird serendipity things that yuletide does sometimes: I've asked for Fame OT3 futurefic more than once, and this year I decided to offer it on a whim, just in case it was time for me to step up and write the story that I wanted myself. Apparently it was; I think I may have been sitting on this story for, like, fifteen years. Thanks to
Dani for giving me the opportunity. ♥
