Yuletide 2011: Sic Transit Gloria Mundi (Marvel 1602, Steve/Tony)

And the second yuletide post of the day: the story reveal! I cannot imagine that anyone will be very surprised to learn that I wrote:

Sic Transit Gloria Mundi for
baffledking
Marvel 1602 (Marvel, Iron Man Movies) • Steve Rogers/Tony Stark • Mature • 12,000 words
Two days after his spies reported that Anthony Stark had returned to England-battered, they told him, but alive-Sir Nicholas Fury rode to Deptford.

Warnings for colonialism, imperialism, the Age of Discovery, Renaissance European (English) views on race, gender, sexuality, exploration, and religion, and 1602's Captain America. Enticements for William Shakespeare, time travel, a kraken, Pepper Potts, and messing about in boats. Thanks to
epershand,
aria,
newredshoes, e_clare,
marina, and pretty much everyone else I talked to about this story during the crazy month between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Especially my father, who started the ball rolling.

Two years ago, when I wrote Stated Target, I made a big point of noting that, at 4000 words, it was the longest yuletide story I had ever written. I have no idea what even happened this year. I was ambushed by Anthony Stark. I was possessed by Neil Gaiman. I secretly wanted to write an epic about Christopher Marlowe. It took 12,000 words to turn a major fandom character and pairing into something with the spirit of yuletide. I DO NOT EVEN KNOW. I will say this, however: the combination of the historical period of my heart (and my professional life) and one of my current big deal fannish obsessions, was…a little deadly. I loved writing this story, and I loved doing the research. Writing it was a crazy last-minute whirlwind of 12,000 words in five days, but I am very, very happy with the result.

Although I do have this problem, now: I sort of desperately want to write the Anthony/Kit Marlowe prequel. AMBUSHED BY ANTHONY STARK.
