V for Vendetta

Every time i see a movie based on a comic book, i remember just how good comics can be. Especially when those movies kick ass (Sin City, Batman Begins), but also when they suck monkey balls (Batman & Robin, Fantastic 4). That said, I totally want to go and reread V for Vendetta now.

The movie is definately something to go see and form your own opinion, but I'd like to take a step back and look at the entire moviegoing experience.

I showed up to find out whether or not they had an evening show at 9:20. They did, at 10. I promptly bought a ticket (8 bucks for students? cocks) and took off to wawa so that i'd miss regal's patented Pre-Movie Fuck You, Audience Member, the 20. A

Armed with a lemonade iced tea, i bravely went in at 9:55, mentally prepping myself for the tail end of the 20. What I found was good, bad, and mind-wrenchingly horrifying. The good news, the 20 has apparently been done away with. The bad news is that it has been replaced with something called "Firstlook" and is pretty much the same thing. The mind-wrenchingly horrifying part? Firstlook was covering the movie "American Dreamz" Some of you may remember American Dreamz as the movie whose preview almost caused me to literally throw up in the movie theatre from pure terribleness. Let me tell you, that was no fluke. Again, I nearly vomited, the only thing saving the dinner i had recently consumed was that i hadn't seen a half-dozen shitty previews beforehand and it was over quickly.

After the horrible (albiet brief) trainwreck of the Firstlook, we moved onto commercials, which i'm pretty successful in tuning out. Then onto preview. First up: A movie from DC. A movie with Marlon Brando. About a young man who grew up on a farm and moved to the big city to seek his fortune. That's right. Superman Returns. Mmmm....
Second: A horror flick. Based on a video game. A terrifying, terrifying video game. Silent Hill. Not my bag but still not bad...
Third: Marvel presents. Patrick Stewart Narrates. A girl with red hair blasts a 12inch thick steel door off its hinges with her mind. Kelsey Grammar is blue and furry. X3 May 26.
Fourth: A Jerry Bruckheimer film. Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me. Seen it before, still looks very hit or miss. Depp, Bloom and Knightly all come back for Pirates of the Carribean 2.

Then onto the movie. I sat stunned for a minute, convinced that there needed to be at least one more preview, and it had to be something extremely shitty. But instead, we were treated to V for Vendetta.

I'm not going to write anything about the plot, as i think you should go see it. But I liked it. I liked the actors, i liked the choices, i liked the teases and the end. A couple of moments could've been better but ultimately, I was well pleased.

I do, however, need to go back and read the book again, being as the venerable Mr. Alan Moore declined the "based on the graphic novel by" credit. Now i know that Moore keeps getting fucked over by...well, pretty much everybody, but I didn't think that this was the cinematic trainwreck as, say, the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Though that might explain why he doenst want his name on things....

Anyway, GO SEE IT.

I was thinking of using a different userpic for this entry, but then i realized that the one taken from a movie based on a comic written by one of the greatest authors i've ever read.
