Panda on the rebound?

Oct 15, 2009 20:33

We took Panda to the vet tonight. We aren't looking for a miracle, but if there was an obvious problem, we were prepared to let him go. Our vet was doting on Panda because she has guinea pigs of her own! And, there's nothing obviously wrong with Panda. With a prey animal like a guinea pig, it's really hard to figure out what is wrong. They don't show signs of weakness until it is almost too late. The signs we have with Panda are that he is not eating and therefore not pooping. Anyone who has ever had a male guinea pig may be familiar with the infamous anal impaction - which has happened a couple of times recently. We were suspecting a blockage of some sorts, but our vet didn't find anything internal. We gave him 35 ml of fluids and a shot of baytril to hopefully clear out an infection and stimulate his appetite. We'll give him another does of liquid in a couple of days. Good thing we have all of the supplies thanks to Salem!

He actually is looking better since I posted my status on facebook a week ago. He's moving around more and nibbling on food. We're going to mush up some pellets and try to force feed him a bit. He may be weak and slow, but he's not showing any signs of pain. Even at 5.5 years old, we probably have a good amount of time left if he can bounce back from whatever is wrong right now. I'll keep you all updated!
