After Stone Mountain, the Botanical Gardens, and a Braves vs. Mets game, we all crashed in the apartment for the night. Friday morning, we packed up for a 2-day camping trip at DeSoto Falls in northern Georgia. The drive was pretty uneventful, except for the chuckling at the town of Lumpkin. We pulled into the campsite and immediately tried to find the best available spot. There were a few still open, but we ended up in the exact same spot Jon and Laura used before. We settled, set up camp, and grabbed some lunch. The camp host stopped by and we sorted out the fees and whatnot - then we headed right back out for food and beer. Unfortunately - that county is a dry county, so we had to drive to Helen, Georgia for alcohol. Helen is a magical place! It's an alpine/bavarian village in the middle of nowhere!
I was, of course, ecstatic to find my name on a candy shop! We grabbed a beer in a biergarden - though the beer actually came from Wisconsin and soaked in the sights.
Camping is camping. We spent a fair amount of time looking for wood around the campsite. We cut it up and built a fire. We cooked on the fire. We ate and drank and played 45s. I wrote a couple of drunken letters and/or postcards. At night, it was amazingly clear. We wandered away from the people and marveled at the sky. We even saw a shooting star. Aww. On Saturday, we hiked to the falls. Here are lower and upper DeSoto Falls. If you slow down the shutter speed, you get the soft, misty water instead of hard drops.
the lower
and the upper!
And then it was over. Unfortunately, Andrew and I had a 14 hour drive back to NJ. We crashed at his parent's house in VA for the night, but we still drove 10 hours straight to get there.
Now, we are planning for the trip out to Vancouver!
