Superheroes run

Over the weekend, we did our first ever family run - the DC Justice League Run - at Sentosa.

There couldn't have been a more appropriate first race for my superhero-loving boys - we were each assigned a superhero team (Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern and Batman) and our race outfits included superhero tees/singlets, masks and even a red cape for Superman.

Of course, the participants took the opportunity to go all out - we saw whole families decked out in superhero gear and many people in full costumes - The Joker, Venom, Spiderman, Flash, Batwoman, Wonder Woman and so many others!

We started the race nice and easy. Sean and Ryan were very enthusiastic at the start and happily ran amongst the crowd.

The weather was sunny but not too scorching. The race route brought us through scenic spots around Sentosa - the Merlion, cable cars, Pahlawan Beach - and there were some forested bits and slopes to keep things interesting.

Ryan (who wasn't feeling well and was quite grumpy that day) quickly lost steam so Foops had to carry him for most of the way. Foops wanted to call it quits halfway but I said no because I wanted the kids to learn that we should always finish what we start no matter what. So we doubled back to the start line where my helper and Jordan were waiting to get the stroller for Ryan and we carried on with the rest of the race :)

Sean was a champ that day - he actually ran/walked for the entire 5km and chatted with me the whole way. He did whine about how tired he was and how long he has been running. I tried to keep the children's spirits up by pointing out superheroes to them and telling to look out for the distance markers and the water points.

I had no doubt Sean could do it - he has boundless energy - so didn't really pay much heed to his whining. But when I think about a 6yo completing a 5km run on his own, hey it is a pretty amazing feat!

Sean was super pleased when we reached the finish line and received our superhero medals. He definitely earned his medal. Ryan was a bit sheepish about making such a fuss during the run - I hope he will try again next time!

It was a good Sunday morning workout and a very fun race experience - I certainly hope it won’t be our last :)
