P1 registration done and dusted

Like most 6-year-olds in Singapore, Sean is registering for Primary 1 next year.

Since he was born, we have always known he would go to his grandfather and father's primary school (even before we decided which kindergarten to enrol him in) and even when we were house-hunting, the proximity of our house to his primary school was one of our key considerations in our shortlisting process.

We did briefly contemplate another primary school which is very popular and within 1km of our place but the thought of having to do 40 parent volunteer hours and having to go through balloting really put us off.

So that made our P1 registration process relatively straightforward - Foops made sure he joined the alumni few years back and the 2A1 phase registration went by rather uneventfully. (It would have been a very different story if we had daughters because I have no primary school affiliation!)

I did have an interesting time checking out the school when we went down for the registration. It was my first visit there.

What I liked was that Sean's future school has a very long established history and has a strong identity of its own. Foops is still rather close to his primary/secondary schoolmates and I hope Sean will go on to forge lifelong friendships in his new school too.

I was very amused by the sight of the little boys in uniform wearing too-long ties and too-big schoolbags. I checked out the ECA board and mentally shortlisted some ECAs for Sean to try out (track, Scouts, soccer, art and craft). Before I left, I also popped by the canteen to get a feel of the food prices so I can gauge how much pocket money to give him. Sean will have to take the bus to school - and I wonder if I can somehow manage to send him to school on my way to work. So many things to think about and prepare for!

Can't believe my blur sotong firstborn is going to primary school soon. It has been quite an experience following the very exciting (though some would say nerve-wracking) registration process.

All the best to those at 2C phase this week!
