June holiday art class at HeArt Studio

It is fast becoming a tradition for us to attend holiday art classes at HeArt Studio.

It was Ryan's (3.5yo) first ever art class - he cried a bit when I dropped him off - but he settled down very quickly with Teachers Jay and Syafiq.

The theme of Ryan's class was Seaside Day.

He learnt how to mix yellow and brown paint together and 'hop' his brush 'like a bunny' to paint the sandy beach background. When I came back 1.5 hours later, his painting was all done and he was happily munching on snacks with his little friends and chatting with his teachers.

I was very impressed by his completed artwork. Going by the age of the kids, I am sure they got a lot of help from the teachers but I really appreciated the fact that the kids were able to learn many different art techniques - like hitting the brushes together to get a paint splatter effect on the sand, how to mix paint and dab on the canvas to create the rippled waves effect and how to draw spirals and shells for the sea shells and polka-dots for the starfish.

So proud of my little Ryan!

Three years in, Sean is an old dog at art lessons at HeArt Studio by now :)

I really liked the theme of his session - African Animals by one of our favourite children's author and illustrator Eric Carle.

Sean chose to draw a lion and he told me he completed the entire painting by himself and his teacher only had to help him with the outline of the eye of the lion and blow-drying his painting dry.

When questioned further (because I couldn't believe he could draw such a beautiful lion), Sean told me he learnt how to draw the lion by breaking down the form into basic shapes and started from there. The lion was drawn with rigid lines to mimic Eric Carle's style. Then he learnt how to make marks on his painting using brushes and tools.

I was very impressed, and I love the paintings! They are hanging proudly on the walls of their rooms now :)

The boys enjoyed themselves and they said they want to do more paintings to fill up their walls. I love art, and I hope this plants the seed of love and appreciation for art in them :)

If you are looking for a good children's art school, I would highly recommend HeArt Studio!
