Show and tell

On the last week of school before the September hols break, Sean's class had a show-and-tell session.

The children have been learning about attractions in Singapore and focusing on Jurong Bird Park.

And lucky us, they opened it up to parents for the first time ever!

For the past few months, the teachers and students have been working very hard to put everything together. The students were tasked to make birds and local food from recycled materials during the June holidays (here's ours). They drew Jurong Bird Park tickets for parents.

They also worked in groups to conceptualise and make model birds in school. They have been spending the last few weeks rehearsing for their presentations.

So proud of all of them :)

On the day of the show-and-tell, we were greeted warmly at their classroom and handed tickets to the Bird Park.

Led by the enthusiastic teachers, the class performed a song about birds and then the students took turns to go to the front of the class to present their birds and local food.

Many of the children spoke very confidently and the standard of their homemade birds (think papier mache birds) really blew me away. They put our toilet roll penguins to shame. I must try harder next time!

Sean, who has been a lot more introspective and sensitive lately, mumbled through his script and needed a lot of prompting from his teacher (I took a video but he could barely be heard). He later told me he was very nervous.

Tiger mum me told him he could do much better next time. As much as I felt like I wanted to rescue my firstborn while he was squirming in discomfort in front of his friends (no doubt remembering my own awkward childhood), I thought it was a good public speaking experience for him and kudos to him for trying :)

Overall, I thought it was a really good initiative to let the kids present their handiwork in front of the class and participate in project work in groups, and for parents to come and see them in action.

Hope the school will have more of such activities going forward!
