School's out!

Today was Sean's last day of his first term in school. (Yes, he has stopped coughing and is feeling much better so we let him go to school.)

He came home today and proudly handed me a big folio containing some of the artwork pieces he has completed during the term.

It made me smile - it was so cute getting a tiny glimpse of what he gets up to in school everyday. He even had some 'holiday homework' to do over the one-week break next week!

It has only been slightly over two short months since he started pre-nursery and it is evident that school has been really good for him.

Here's a sampling of some of the things he has learnt in the term gone by:

He has gone from resisting going to school to absolutely enjoying it. He happily boards the school bus every morning, greeting one and all on board with a cheery, 'Hi, friends!'.

Even when we tease him about bringing him somewhere else on a school day, he will tell us, 'No, Ming-ming go school!'.

He can carry a decent conversation in English, a true testament to young children's incredible ability to adapt and pick up a whole new language.

He can count one to ten. He knows all the animal sounds.

He has progressed from humming tunes to singing full verses of songs (even though the lyrics are a bit jumbled up at some points).

He knows how to take care of his belongings. He carries his own bag with all his barang-barang everywhere he goes.

He can sit still at the table long enough to complete an art-based activity. He knows how to wield the scissors and the glue stick on his own.

He insists on feeding himself. He is almost fully toilet-trained in the day and knows how to use the step stool and soap dispenser to wash his hands after using the toilet.

More importantly, he has picked up many social and interactive skills which we probably wouldn't be able to teach him at home. He is very good about sharing and taking turns. He says things like, 'clean up', 'stop', 'be careful, car coming', 'please', 'thank you', 'ah-come' (welcome), 'so-yee' (sorry), 'come play with me', 'wait for Ming-ming', 'excuse me' and 'bless me' (bless you).

I am so, so amazed by how much he has grown and learnt in just one term alone! Can't wait to see what the rest of the school year will bring.

In the meantime, I am just going to fully savour the one-week break with my not-so-little-anymore boy :)
