Project House: Tiles selection CHECK!

Nov 30, 2011 08:43

As advised by our ID, we have decided to keep the original marble floors of the living room and the parquet floors of all the three bedrooms.

They are still in good condition (even after 12 years) and probably just need a good coat of polish and varnish. And apparently, according to another ID guy we spoke to, they don't make floors like they used to anymore.

Well, as long as we can re-varnish the orange-y walnut parquet floors to a lighter or darker colour that is more pleasing to the eye, we were happy to keep the flooring as is. (And it's considerable savings for us too!)

So all we had to do last weekend was choose new tiles for the two bathrooms and the kitchen, which we are rehauling significantly.

Bathrooms: I was more than happy to go with the soft, understated white-grey palette that our ID suggested. I call it the Muji look ;)

Kitchen: Our contractor offered the option of fancy-schmancy granite tiles in his package but the ones we saw at the tile shop were all super glossy and very slippery-looking. In the end, we opted for a more matt, natural look and also helped to save more moolah in the process!

L to R:
1) Bathroom wall: Matt white horizontal-grooved tiles for Master Bedroom and plain white/cream ones for Common Bathroom
2) Bathroom floor: Homogenous light grey tiles (it is a much lighter shade of grey in real life) - My ID and I really liked the smooth, understated look of this.
3) Kitchen floor: Matt black tiles with a rough, striated surface and a tiny hint of glitz

All in an afternoon's work. Easy peasy :)

We got our tiles from Hup Kiong but our ID did bring us to Hafary nearby to have a look-see after we confirmed our order.

Would highly recommend going to the latter because they have a very impressive (and probably more expensive) range of premium tiles, stones, mosaic and wood flooring! Made me really wish we had gone there first though I would probably have had a hard time making a decision!

Oh, I thought I should share this funny convo we had with our ID that day:

K (our ID) pointing to a tile: See this red accent here?
Foops: Red? You mean orange? Are you colour-blind or something?! (They are long-time friends so they just talk like that.)
K: Yeah I am. I can't tell certain shades of red and green apart.
F: Wha..t?!! You didn't tell us this before we signed the contract!

HAHAHA, at least we are using lots of muted colours (white, beige, black and grey) for our place - so I think we are still safe ;)
