Pregnancy read

When I first found out I was preggers and could not quite tell or ask anyone about it, I went out and got myself Pregnancy and Birth by Dr Miriam Stoppard.

I finished reading the few hundred pages of 'what to expect' in a few weeks or so. Very informative, plenty of pictures (good to keep me interested) and written in that serious no-nonsense tone that doctors always use on their patients. It was perfect bedtime reading material because it can get quite clinical and boring and puts me in the right mood for bed. Zzzzzz. Still, I lapped every word up then so it was a good book to start with.

Then Sups went out and got me this book called the The Pregnancy Instruction Manual by Sarah Jordan with David Ufberg, M.D.

Everything revolves around the Nutrient Absorption Chamber

I have just started reading it and so far, it's a complete riot. I don't think I'll learn a lot more than what I know already but somehow it just hit the right notes for me. I like the light-hearted tongue-in-cheek tone that it is written in, the quirky illustrations and how they address silly yet very real issues which 'serious' pregnancy books would never consider discussing like how to ward off unwanted tummy touchers and if it is normal to crave for beef jerky (or ba kwa in our local context?). It's also extremely Dad-friendly so I'm definitely going to get Foops to read it.

Some excerpts:
♥ Sperm are completely misguided. As with many men, they refuse to ask for directions even as they swim blindly and with great brio down a nonovulating fallopian tube.

♥ Sometimes it seems as though your baby is the fussiest customer at the uterus cafe, one who wouldn't stop making bizarre menu requests.

♥ Dads, if you accompany her to the toilet to comfort her when she's sick, hold her hair back gently and never ever let her see you grimace when she barfs. That vomit spewer is the mother of your child.

Well, you know me, I am always up for a good laugh. I'll be sure share more excerpts as I go along...

I'd say it'd make a great gift for expecting mothers, even if it's just for laughs. It's admittedly not the 'be-all-and-end-all' guide but hey, I think pregnancy should be fun, too :)

Apparently, there's Baby and Toddler Owner manuals too.
