OK, aside from the horrible lack of information that could make this a better article, what do y'all think of this occurrence?

To me, I see a man that is likely bigoted by his upbringing. He doesn't likely see the harm or wrong in using the word "fagot," and I wouldn't be surprised if he still refers to "guidos" or "hunkies" with equal blase. That's not right, but the fact that he is willing to suggest that a homosexual is of equal value in a combat theater moves him rather ahead of his contemporaries in the social enlightenment category. Unless this was the end result of repeated warnings and reprimands, I can't get behind this as a firing offense. It seems like this was a case of American jumping on the chance to get out of paying his full retirement package.
But Im interested in what others think on this.
