Dear colleagues around the world! We are Ukrainian journalists, Ukrainian women. We ask for your help and we need it now like never before.
Today, January 22, in our capital city Kiev authorities have killed five protesters and once again have been assaulting journalists. Riot police has been beating protesters and journalists with truncheons, using against them stun and gas grenades, tear gas, and shooting them at sight with pump-action guns and firearms. These acts of violence have been used even against representatives of media, defenceless women and old people.
January 17 President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych signed new laws adopted by the Verkhovna Rada including the laws that violate freedom of speech and human rights and curtail democracy. With these laws current Government has forbidden Ukrainian journalists to collect and spread information about police, prosecutors and judges, they have violated our right to investigative journalism. They also agreed to limit the freedom of speech for common citizens (e.g. spreading information of the type mentioned above via social networks). Since the beginning of the Revolution there have been more than 100 assaults and cases of intimidation against journalists.
We address you not only like journalists, but like women as well. We are proud of our men who are defending our right to live in a free country. But we need them alive! We ask you to spread the truth about the dictatorship that has taken over our beautiful country, about the crime against humanity in Ukraine committed by authorities - murders, kidnapping, tortures and assaults taking place here. We beg you to call on world media to cover current situation in Kiev and help us defeat the authorities that have become criminal.
